see, that's awesome news. They've learned with each product how to get their fans what they want. I bet there's a slight price bump on stuff because of that, but we won't notice it. :D

This has been their stance on this game since it's first announcement. if you only play one faction you only have to buy that faction. The pricing is pretty similar to the cost of the imperial assault figures.

I hope youre kidding. This is more of a one faction game, not like Armada or X-wing.

1. Tournaments require physical cards for each upgrade (lame, but they do) so there's one good reason.

2. Ebay. Someone will buy your extras for reason 1 above. :)

Win/win.

This may be the only thing for the game that I don't buy, but the thing that I'm most glad exists for others.

I think the punch board that the terrain and templates come in probably dictated the size of the box

Yeah, that occurred to me after I posted. Good point. Still, one can hope, right?

3! I was debating on getting a second!

Though for those of use crazies that want to play a 400 point game...

Well done FFG.

I'm still buying a core set even though I'm planning on rocking Elves.

You'll be able to run the Elven archers with the Daquan units from the Core set as long as your army includes Kari. I wonder how common being able to include units from other factions will be.

What I find very nice is to announce this just *before* the release of the core so that those who were wondering whether to buy a core for the essentials know beforehand that it is not required. Nice move that must be applauded

This is true. I'm assuming that a Daquan player would buy the 2 tray Elven unit of choice if they need a cheaper option. If Elves and Daquan mix I'll be covered for a while, thats for sure.

While I love this move I also wonder when they'll sell out of the core and how fast they'll have it reprinted. Announcing this before that happens is also good for the inevitable whining about FFG's printing and underestimating demand practices as well.

FFG just made a decision based solely on pleasing the community than making them more money, they said everyone who doesn't want to play waiqar or daqan does have to buy the core, just wait patiently. I have never seen this type of decision made by a miniature game company...While yes it does mean that a new player only playing elves or uthuk may have to pay more for their faction it does save them from have to buy $80-100 worth of minis they don't want...

::golf clap::

Do we knwo they made it because we wanted it or was it already planed? In all other miniature wargames I know you do not need to buy a 2 player starter/faction starter set to get essential stuff to play, you can either buy it or download or copy a page with templates and stuff from the rulebook. So yes a nice move but something to be expected of a product that calls itself a miniature wargame.

And I'm sure there are more miniature wargame company who listen to their customers, soem say that's the reason why GW released a book with points for Age of Sigmar.

So knwo i could wait for the Uthuk, or get the core for the undead, not a easy decision.

Maybe they planned it because it's what we wanted based on their feedback from gamers and years of making games experience? They didn't want to put double of it all in the starter for whatever reason, and it's a big investment for players already. Makes sense they'd do this if they knew their audience ahead of time...and they seem to.

FFG, the company that understands its players.

Looking at you Games Workshop >:(

GW's doing GREAT at their fanbase repair. If you're going to point at Shadow War then it was an underprinting and they're moving very fast to get it resolved. Great service on the problem.

Why again? As said this is a good move but having templates and other essential stuff that might be in a starter available for purchase without the starter is normal for a miniature wargame, nothing special to see here.
And this is nothing against FFG/Runewars I just don't see what's so special or awesoem about it.

Shhhhh, we do not mention the company-that-must-not-be-named

I absolutely, 100% agree with this. It would have been so easy to post this next week, after a bunch of Latari/Uthuk fans already bought a core. Granted, that's still not a bad purchase, but if you're strapped for cash, this is definitely good news.

You must be talking about Spartan Games. They don't use custom templates and such for many things. FFG uses movement tools and what not consistently.

This pack allows a tournament organizer to have tournament approved replacements and templates. It matches FFG's desire for exact prints and terrain

Spartan's Dystopian wars uses custom turn templates, only game of theirs I play. They're in the book or online, but not fancy cardboard...just bleh cardstock. Bought me an acrylic set.

Very smart move. Cardboard and paper provide a good enough profit margin to make this really worth while for FFG and economic for the community who only wants to play a given faction.

I just noticed that the essentials pack includes dice. I missed that at first. I thought for sure they would expect you to just pick up the dice pack separately.

I do no much about Spartan games these days but many mini games have different templates than other games and normally you can buy them, download them or copy them from the rulebook. Same for the rulebook, you can get it in 2 palyer starter sets or depending on company downlaod it for free or buy it. True most mini games don't use movement templates and that many cards, but I do now quite some miniature games and in none I know do you have to buy a starter set to be able to play it, normally you can buy the stuff you need individually or download it. So yes this is nothing new or special for me and because FFG was selling this more as miniature wargame that X-Wing/Armada I personally was expecting something lile this.
So yes this is new for FFG but for someone that has been doing miniature wargames for quite some time it's nothing new.
