These rules!

By Lyraeus, in Runewars Miniatures Game

My oh my! These base rules are well written! I can see several points from Armada fixed here (one that hints at my old thread) as well as things fixed from X-Wing... FFG is going to be a big name soon enough.

What are your favorite rules so far?

[sarcasm] How line of sight is still up in the air as far as whether line of sight is required for all ranged abilities or only those that specify that line of sight is required. [/sarcasm]

Right now the entire package feels tight (ew). It hits on all cylinders in reading for me. I like the terrain keywording and it's area - not just individual items (like a tree, hello TLOS - hate you), and the swappable heroes into units, and how units are built, and the upgrade system and now that I see we're getting banners/musicians that'll be a nice tweak and so on. The combination of stances and options feels great. I've liked the custom dice stuff since their WHFRPG and into Xwing and so on (and the movement system).

I'm sure some stuff will be oddball and need errata here and there, but overall it's reading like a great system. I wanted to enjoy Kings of War when they killed of WHFB for the rank and file system, but even with all the army options the game felt bland (very tight stat ranges across armies, entire unit is a 'marker' not individual models, not enough 'crunch' for me). This seems to be the halfway point between the lack in KoW and the rules death in WHFB when it ended...

Do you. Mean like archers and magic? Not sure what you mean.

LoS is always a pain to set up and I think they did decent here.

How surges can be used multiple times, and bane tokens stack, and can be spent individually...

Buahahaha! ALL THE BLIGHT IN THE WORLD!

The issue is that the LOS rules stipulate that "ranged effects" need LOS, but they never define what effects those are.

Case in point, Kari's ranged surge. Does it require LOS? If so, she can't actually ever use it while engaged along her front edge, because LOS is completely blocked.

I don't want to derail this thread, and I think half a dozen of us have sent a rules inquiry to FFG, so we're just waiting for the clarification. If you want to read more about it, read this thread:

By the end of the first page, a rules debate erupts. If you're into that kind of stuff, it's an interesting read.

But going forward with your original question of things I like, I agree that the rues are mostly very well-organized. I love the ability to reference specific sections of the rule book. That's a very welcome addition to the rules reference. I feel like they really had tournaments in mind when they built this game, unlike other games that may have been constrained more by theme.

My favorite innovation is having initiative tied to the action you choose on your action dial. I can't even begin to describe how much I like that rules. It adds a whole new layer of planning when compared to X-Wing.

You don't know me very well if you ask if I am into rules debates :P

I love this as well. The combination of unit build flexibility (upgrades) and the unit abilities themselves plus the way the dials and stances interact make this a very deep tactical game IMO. There's a lot of possibilities in play - nothing overly rulesy like someone may complain about, just available options to bring to bear. I also like the morale deck mechanic over 'roll/do they run off, or roll/take off more guys' systems.

Life is blight!

Blight is right!

I like most of the rules the only ones I don't like are LoS for the ambiguity there and terrain for the stickyness of it.

they still havent answered whether you can pass through terrain that you start you turn touching but haven't occupied

Game is not out yet officially

It was released at Adepticon, therefor it's out. The question stands

That is called a prerelease and so the game is not officially released yet. They don't answer questions typically for some time after release.

That is a BS stance to take, the product is out, the questions about that product are legitimate, as people are using said product, product support should be in place.

Are you new to FFG games? They don't post FAQs right away for anything and that's after new releases too, not just pre-release products.

It is not out officially. That is their historical trend. When waves are released early for special events those models are not tournament official. Just like the game which does not yet have tournament rules to it. It is not a officially supported product yet. That occurs on Release date.

FFG does not play favorites here.

From my reading of the manual, the answer would appear to be no as you would just collide again. I'll look in the manual when I get a chance later and try to come up with a specific part that says one way or the other.

Until they chime in, flip a coin for it or agree in your play area that it does/doesn't. Easy enough to house rule something like that if it really is that vague.

the point of question comes from the section on collision where it mentions terrain you didn't start the turn in contact with. That creates the question, it's not cut and dry.

LMFAO. I've played their games since Battlemist, disc wars, and the original armada. No, I'm not new, but it's a simple question to answer presumably, and it's one that matters a great deal to the game. Hopefully, even a member of the Demo team should be able to answer it, yet they haven't. That's annoying. I'm not asking for a FAQ, I'm asking for a simple response, the likes of which they have answered with alacrity in the past

Demo team never answers as far as I can tell. I am not sure they are allowed to.

FFG miniature side tends to do all question responses via email the FAQ/Eratta but only AFTER officially released. I have not seen otherwise in fact.

If it is their policy, it's a bad one.

Not sure how it is a bad one. It means all questions are answered at one time and that everything is resolved before the next set.

In any company that produces a salable product you will have people on hand to answer questions on that product, regardless of it's release schedule. When a question about said product is posed and your staff receives it, it's prudent to answer asap especially when some of that product is in the hands of your consumers who are actively using said product. I'm not asking for anything that's not ready for distribution or for anything that may be questionable. They have produced rules and those are available for the public, there is a question about those rules, that product. They should answer those questions regardless of some arbitrary time table.
