Characters: Old, New, and Altered

By JCHendee, in Talisman Home Brews

Some of us are getting back into (re)creating Character Cards as one-offs or sets. I know we had a topic like this once, but I didn't feeling like digging for it. So here we are, once again.

Feel free to post text versions for review or completed cards for download. Try to post a reduced screen graphic sample for viewing, to keep the bandwidth down, and then link an archive with the print resolution card and its "standee" token. Should you choose to do your own variation on a standard character, you might want to mark it with an icon (see the lower left corner of my examples).

A back for character cards can be found HERE at TalismanIsland.com

A new take on the old Samurai. Print res card and token are HERE.

A little further variation upon the Samurai... the Ronin or "wave (wandering) man"... a samurai who has somehow lost his patron lord or house. You will notice that on most of the characters I'm posting I am reusing standard abilities from other characters in new combinations. These are more than adequate for new characters if the combination is carefully considered and applied in theme... with maybe just a little tweaking.

The archive for print res graphics is HERE.

Hey that Ronin looks really good, where did you get the artwork for it.
I like the stats for it but I think that the 2nd special ability should be 6 or higher (otherwise it penalizes anyone who has mules, warhorses etc.)

I use public domain and copyright free pieces along with sample renders of models for 3D graphics environments. These I pastiche together with postwork and effects in Photoshop CS4 Extended.

Nope... the more of an entourage he has, the less he's able to sereptitiously nose about or follow gossip and rumors to learn what's ahead before encountering it. Its the difference between an troop of followers that raise too much attention and being on his own for reconnaissance. From a game mechanics perspective, it limits the character from getting too advantageous in combining followers with preknowledge of if and when to hit the Adventure deck to gain or avoid the next card. With three followers, he would still have a 50/50 chance to be nosy without getting noticed, so to keep his "peeking" ability reasonable effective, he'll have to avoid too many tag-alongs.

Where Followers are concerned, He's also thereby halfway between my edition of the Ninja (coming soon) and the Samurai, as well as the Bushi (coming soon).

Although, come to think of it, his peeking ability should probably come at the beginning of his turn to be more effective... I have updated that card (you may need to do a hard refresh of the page to see the changes).

And my alternative take on the Ninja. You will note that he can now take Followers, though he loses special abilities if he does. He is also now susceptible to the Hag, and like negative followers, but he has a touch more in the way of special abilities when he isn't burdened by them. The print res card and token archive can be downloaded HERE.

SPECIAL NOTE: The illustration for this card is not one of my usual pastiche works; it was found on the internet. I believe it is a sample render from a 3D model, but I couldn't verify this at any of my usual haunts on the net. If anyone discovers it is the work of a specific artist, let me know and I will look harder for a suitable replacement that isn't a violation of artist's ownership and rights.

Since the Ninja speaks of evading enemies on a draw space, I assume you meant Middle region, and not Inner?

Oh bother! Well, good thing you mentioned that. It's a mistake. It should read Middle and Outer, though with mention of a draw space, region doesn't need to be mentioned at all.

Thanks for catching that. I'll fix it and have the correction up by tomorrow.

Here is what I wrote for the Minotaur character card- whenever I get to making it;

Strength: 6

Craft: 1

Lives: 6

Fate: 1

ALignment: Evil, Start : Crags

Special Abilities:

You do not need to roll the die in the Crags. You are always safe there. If you do roll the die, you must accept the result.

You are not affected by the Maze or the Siren.

You may not wear a helmet.

You need only roll 1 die when you attempt to open the Portal of Power by Strength.

You need only roll 2 dice when in the Mines.

More to come....

Actually, region MIGHT matter depending on your concept of the character.

If you put in "Outer and Middle", it means that other draw spaces, currently, like the Dungeon, or, possible future ones, like City, etc… does not trigger his special ability.

If you want it to be in all Regions, current, expansion, and future, just mention draw cards.

Just a suggestion.

Here is my notes on the Ranger;

Strength: 3

Craft: 3

Lives: 4

Fate: 4

Special Abilities;

1. You do not need to roll the die when in the crags, chasm or forest. You are always safe. If you do roll the die, you must accept the result.

2. You ignore the affects of the storm and blizzard.

3. You do not lose a life in the desert.

4. You add 1 to your roll for battle when attacking or being attacked by animals.

Cheers.

That's another good point for mentioning regions... since the Dungeon and any possibly Inner Region overlay would be "levelers" that make characters face them more evenly. I think region mention would be best.

I think Dorian "Dth" Put together a minotaur character in his Gauntlet expansion (check at TalismanIsland.com if you're curious).

Most of what you have would be character that I would play except for the die reductions. I'd lean more towards a roll bonus on the Portal of Power (but only in using Strength) and the Mines. Reduced die is too much. In general, I'm not in favor of any characters having it easier in the Inner Region than others unless they've earned to gained the advantage through play.

Ninja has been typo corrected for anyone who wants it. The print res card and token archive can be downloaded HERE. A slight wording change on Ronin's last ability was also made, so I've re-upped that one as well HERE.
