Family rpg needed.

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Easter is comming and there will be a big get together. I usually handle the entertainment and so far at these things I have been getting folks into. Big ole x wing brawl.

This time I am planning on doing talisman.

But, there has been growing interest in trying an RPG. I m the only one who has ever done them before so I need to introduce all the concepts and get a game together.

There will be kids around and a some maybe playing briefly. I figured DnD would be the ideal start point but...It's pretty heavy on the stabby killey stuff.

So, trying to minimize that I am thinking about reskinning 5e rules as a marvel superheroes themed thing. This lets me change killing into "knock outs" .

Anyone with experience in this sort of thing? Maybe a resource to recommend? Or an entirely different game to look into?

It's hard to balance the adult fun with the kid friendly and also the grandma looking on sensitivity.

Tiny Dungeon. It's a super simple system, great for introducing RPG's and easy to keep content Family-friendly.

I have the First Edition and love it. The original maker (Smoking Salamander) recently sold it to another game maker, Gallant Knight Games. I don't think they've actually done anything with it since then.

Savage Worlds is a really good system, and it lives up to it's slogan "Fast, Furious, and Fun". It satisfies both the crunchy simulationist (me) and the ultra-narrativist, rules lite guy in our group. Pretty easy to learn, inexpensive rulebook (the explorer's edition), and it has an exploding die mechanic that can result in some really awesome successes that kids would probably really get into (if you roll the highest value on a die, you roll it again and add the results. I had a player that rolled a 42 on a D6 once).

Well, to be somewhat cliche given this forum, why not try Age of Rebellion/Edge of the Empire/Force and Destiny? Most people are at least passingly familiar with Star Wars, so as a setting its the most accessible for non-gamers. And its pretty strictly PG so everybody can play.

Lots of pregenerated and beginner adventures to run as well.

No... the edge of empire rules, while really good, are also kinda complex and take some time for everybody to learn properly. They aren't really suited to a family get together with essentially non- gamers and kids.

+1 to Savage Worlds. Or Fudge Lite. D&D is a very bad choice for family gaming and SW RPGs are far from easy.

Mice & Mystics

Mice & Mystics

That's what I was going to recommend. It's a RPG lite, and very family friendly.

Ive been looking at mice and mystics on and off for over a year. I LOVE it. My only problem is it caps at 4 players and I am expecting maybe 6 for this occasion.

Still...I need to stop procrastinating and add it to my collection soon anyways.

So far my plan is to do talisman. and I am setting up to do Marvel superheroes seing as its freely available all over being so long out of print. It is also an easy digest system, and everyone there is at the very least casually familiar with the Marvel universe stuff.

For future reference though...there is a index card RPG system on the way from the fella at Drunkens and Dragons that looks fascinating. Stumbled on it while I was looking around for this mission.

That's totally on my to do list with these folks.
