Mauler's ability

By Visovics, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Mauler's ability says : "After you move, each squadron engaged with you suffers 1 damage".

Does this simply mean Mauler can move even when engaged or does this only trigger if the enemy has heavy?

Mauler does not have any special ability to move where normal squadrons could not. To make him count you have to figure out how to keep him moving during the game. Intel is one possibility, or Admiral Chiraneau...

Mauler doesn't get to move, but the damage happens "after you move", ergo, when he flies into a squad initially, the squads he is now next to takes a point of damage.

example:

Ywing Mauler xwing

Mauler activates, moves away from the Y wing (it has heavy, so he can get away) and moves next to the X wing.

Ywing Mauler Xwing

at this point, the xwing takes a damage. Ywing is fine, if he's no longer in the range 1 bubble

As an extra to this, keep in mind that Mauler does not simply affect squadrons in range 1, they have to be engaged. So if the XWing in your example happens to be in an asteroid field there is no engagement and Mauler does not deal damage.

Ok, thanks guys!

Mauler's BFF is Dengar. He's also pals with Chirraneau.

If Mauler was moved into a pack of Y-Wings by virtue of Fighter Coordination Team would that invoke his special ability?

Yes.

FCT is a movement.

Heavy doesn't prevent engagement.

What are you talking about? I don't see anything about asteroids preventing squadron engagement.

But about obstruction preventing engagement. And asteroids obstruct. Put ypur squadrons on obstacles so they are free to move later. Good for sato.

RRG p.6, Engagement:

• If line of sight between two squadrons is obstructed,
those squadrons are not engaged even if at distance 1 of
each other, though they can still attack each other.

THANKS! I read it as the wrong way round, where squadrons that he moves away from received 1 damage. Now it's clear on my head

I missed that. That's...extremely interesting. I already liked Mauler, but this makes him so much more useful. Also makes it a lot easier to set up my attack runs with Rhymerballs. Thank you.

Yep and Ships work for blocking LOS, doesn't have to be asteroids or debris/station, placing squadrons where your opponent has to overlap them can be a good free move to break engagement.

I might be, if I knew who or what Duke is!

Okay, that answers that:). Same user name as someone I know on a basketball forum, so figured I'd ask!:)

Sorry, sports and I don't really get along. Creative differences. ;)

I supposed this one:

GW287H215

But wrong universe.

For me, the one that came to mind was:
