skills question from my last game

By weebaldy, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi All

we are in our 3rd session of my rtl campaign and thanks to all the help from this forum we are getting on fine and having a blast. One question came up last night and I was wondering if anyone could clarify.

I have two melee combat players and one has the Berserk skill card ( obtained at the start of the game) and the other asked the question that should he get to he correct city could he also Buy the Berserk skill.

This raised a question in my mind, can numerous players buy a particular skill as long as they meet the criteria in training etc or is it like a "shop" item in that once a card has been given to a player that skill is no longer available for anyone else.

Thanks For any help you can give

Only one player can put the skill card in front of him, so only one player can have the skill.

cheers james, I kinda thought that might be the case but its great to have it confirmed

Its a bit wierd thematic wise tho isn't it. The players are meant to be buying additional skills from trainers in a city and he is only able to train one person :-))

Its in the Hero Trainers Union Rules.

In Descent (and most, if not all, FFG games) theme is secondary to balance and simplicity.

Whahahahahaha, simplicity, that's a good one! gui%C3%B1o.gif

I mean simplicity in terms of not over-complicating things with exceptions. For instance, the soar rules could be considered fairly complex, but if they wanted to they could have been a lot worse with special rules for moving through soaring creatures, interactions between multiple soarers, etc.

Thanks for the input Guys much appreciated. I can understand from a blalnce point of view why we wouldnt want to have all the skills available to every player to help stop the party from being uber powerful. I Guess as I am from an RPG background and this game plays a BIT like an RPG ( at least it does when we play it) I totally forget that its not so things like theme will, as you have said, come second.

Playing mind games for a minute tho, having the heros assigned to classes ( which the skills dynamic kinda does in a way) would have been really cool but hey ho my group and I are still having a blast.

More importantly... why would 2 people want beserk, let alone one person. There are much better melee skills.
