Its generally referred to in other games system involving swiss, where you take an early Loss to hit the middle of the Day in the middle of the Pack, where you can Club some Baby Seals and rise to the Top that way...

Had an issue where I couldn't pull up the set up area. Happened after @GiledPallaeon loaded his fleet and mine got deleted. Any ideas?

Map packs. Playing with a map pack extension can do this. Pick a map high in the list if your opponent does not have the map pack extension.
Did Giled load continuation or load saved game.

If the play area is an uniform, dull grey, and you can't seem to scroll the map, then you're missing whatever background your opponent loaded on startup.
Which means he's using the map pack and you're not.

No, I started the game and picked the blue-green one.

The second time we tried, I got that screen. I have the map pack installed too.

No, the game was going. I made sure of that. My fleet was also deployed. The second game was the blue-green rift as well.
I have seen this happen rarely before. Not sure what causes it, but it's almost like after some player loads a fleet they hit the spend forward button one to many times and everything except the map disappears on the table. I know that's probably not what is actually happening, but usually the undo button has gotten everything back for me.
