How Do You Play X-Wing?

By Darth Meanie, in X-Wing

So I play pretty competitively in the main. That said, I have also done a ton scenarios and more thematic games both at home and in store.

I play against my 6 year old step son and let me tell you, 100/6 goes out the window. I also got to see what kanan Biggs combined with fat han would be like.... I have nightmares.

Public, but something different every week. 100/6*, scenarios, Mario Kart, furballs, etc. We mix it up.

*Which just sounds stupid as hell to me.

Mostly private for me. Been to one store tournament for wave 10, and going to a charity tournament at the end of the month.

Play 100/6, other smaller Point values / 6, HotAC. Looking at playing other formats as well like mission based games, and I'll be doing a public epic league over the summer.

Greetings

Private. Often solo using missions. Play much less than I would like owing to lack of time.

Edward

Public/Private - Family and friends at home, and a weekly X-Wing night and monthly tournament I've been TO'ing at the local shop. Occasional tournaments to play in and always looking for a game to squeeze in at GenCon.

Style of play: Epic, 100/6, FFG scenarios, HOTAC, home made scenarios.

mostly private 100/6, occasional public 100/6, one time public epic.

Mostly private 100/6, team epic once a month, tournament once a month.

Public & Private: I play once a week no matter what's going on with my brother-in law; then also play in a local league and play in all the local/regional tournaments. Mainly play 100/6 but twice a year the Epic ships come out of the hangar and get to play.

Private, solo Epic, missions, homebrewed scenarios and about to start my first HOTAC campaign. I probabaly have more fun dreaming up homebrewed scenarios than anything but I haven't started HOTAC yet. I'm sure I'll end up modifying it to my liking.

Private 100/6. Would love to find somewhere to do public as well.

I play mostly Public, at the FLGS once a week or so. 100/6 mostly, occasionally an Epic game.
Occasionally I play during lunch with some coworkers, and I might play on a simulator if I have some crazy build I want to try out.

I try really hard to fly non meta lists outside of regional season though. Just to keep myself sane haha.

I play Publicly about 95% of the time. I don't have a standard as I'm always doing crazy crap for my podcast. The least method I play is 100/6 straight up. I can't remember when the last time I played a game like that. Maybe about a month ago after some Mario Kart?

Both.

My oldest friend and I have a standing Wednesday night game. It was anything on his game shelf, Avalon Hill, Yaquinto, etc. Then I introduced him to X-wing about 3 years ago. It's been X-wing every Wednesday with rare exception.

Thursday nights at the flgs. Our flgs is trying to grow X-wing and succeeding!

Sunday's had been HotAC and GCW. Looking for new Sunday pursuit.

Regarding what we fly. Anything but net lists. There have been some bizarre but fun squads on the table. Some of the pilots that rarely see the light of day get used. Some of these builds are effective, some not so much.

We also make the occasional foray up north th another not-so-local game shop. Met 5 pretty great guys up there that head south occasionally. Regardless of the perceived problems with X-wing, if you're not a WAAC job, you can build some great friendships.

Beg pardon but what is 100/6?

HotAC?

and any other acronym reference would be great

100/6 is standard dogfight play - 100 points per side, 6 asteroids. And no, I don't know why it's not 200/6 or 100/3 either.

HotAC is Heroes of the Aturi Cluster, a fan-made co-op campaign using an AI to control the Imperial side.

Thank you.

I usually play 1v1v1 100pts privately. My friends and I like having 3 factions all going at once often we skip the asteroids. And often we will have two people on a team.

we did a 1v1v1 300pt match recently and it was fun but it took 8 hours.

Public - I play at Athena Games, my FLGS, on their regular Wednesday "Flight Nights" and the unofficial "Spaceship Sundays" that happen some weeks. Mostly we play 100/6, but we've done some Epic and Escalation, and I'm currently part of a HotAC campaign. Plus they run monthly tournaments, cycling between 100 point dogfight, Hangar Bay, and Escalation formats.

Private - I very occasionally play at home, but having two hyperactive cats in the house makes this a less than ideal play environment... :)

Virtual - I play a bit of X-Wing on Vassal. I'm trying out the Vassal League for the first time, which is a lot of fun, although I need to pack in some games before the season ends...

I guess I forgot that option! :)

Which ship? I can recommend the Gozanti campaign if it's that. Also Epic in general is cool but it can be unbalanced if you don't both have an Epic ship.

Cool; it is the Gozanti, but we haven't done any of the missions yet. Do you really need the staying power of the giant ship, then?

I find it's the other way around! If your opponent only takes small ships the huge ships can be overwhelmed. When we play we always agree that we'll either take a "small" huge ship (Transport/Gozanti) or "large" huge ship (Corvette/Raider) or both. This keeps thing nicely balanced.

There are two Nintendo Haters in my group but slowly eroding their will...your Mario Kart X Wing must be quite amazing with some youngster involved.

90% private, and of that, more than 50% without points, as a part of a large RPG campaign, with every player as a single pilot with his very personal ship, everyone against me (I'm the dungeon master), so the point is not to win (for my), is to give a fun, hard and rewarding fight, all for the better development of the goblal history we are runing.

The other nearly 50% is mostly "I wanna try this weird combo" or even "this list that won this tournament" in a 100/6. But sometimes (only one or two in a year, to my dismay) full epic, full weekend party, 200+200 vs 200+200.

Ostensibly, that is why I got into this game. We have yet to get the XWM component into the RPG, unfortunately. OTOH, the last session just featured Order 66 (killed one Jedi, the other is now in hiding), so if the party decides to join the growing Rebellion. . .

Public, 100/6 (usually small tournaments) and League (campaign or ladder play, and often some Epic).

X-Wing attendance and enthusiasm is noticeably falling off in my area. (I want to say "unfortunately," and it does make me sad, but I've been pretty unhappy with the direction of the game for a while now, so I'm pretty resigned. Looks like I'll be mostly scratching my dog-fighting itch with Wings of Glory WWI now.)

EDIT: Oh, I forgot weekly HotAC on VASSAL. And, BTW, anybody in the SF Bay Area who'd like to do table-top HotAC, my house-mate and I would host games. Plenty of room, in Daly City. PM me. Same goes, BTW, for Wings of Glory.

Private, 100/6, and I'll add aggressive to that.

Oh dear. I hadn't planned on getting an Epic ship any time soon ...
