How Do You Play X-Wing?

By Darth Meanie, in X-Wing

I assume that I am in a minority here, so I guess I'm just curious.

So, 2 categories:

Public: You usually play at a FLGS or tournament hall with people you may not know

Private: You usually play at you house, or someone else's (or maybe after hours at the office) with people you already know

AND

Typical style of play:

100/6, Epic, or Team Epic.

What do you usually do?

So, personally, I am a Private, Epic player.

I like a variety, so I play 100/6, HOTAC, and a little epic (because huge ships).

As for where I play, I'll play a the flags, or privately, whatever it takes to get my fix!

Poorly.

Oh oh wait sorry. Private 100/6

Public, 100/6 & 75/6

Private, 100/6, but a friend just got our first Epic ship. Would play Publicly too but there's not much available when I'm free.

Private. A vast variety over the last year HotAC, Gozanti campaign, lots of Epic and Epic dogfights at various point levels 150-300. We've themed our last five battles to restrict ships according to what was available at particular times in the timeline (Yavin, Hoth, Endor, Jakku, Starkiller Base). This has been very interesting. Lots of TIE fighters and X-Wings! Also a few 100/6 thrown in.

Played one public tournament last year. Some players were sooooo serious they made me shake in fear. :D On the other hand one player and I had a blast. He gave me his prize as I had won nothing!

Which ship? I can recommend the Gozanti campaign if it's that. Also Epic in general is cool but it can be unbalanced if you don't both have an Epic ship.

Public 100/6 with some epic, and lots of vassal 100/6 too. I'm hoping that some people near me are setting up a HotAC group which I wouldn't mind trying.

Both Public 100/6 and private X/Y where X depends on the number of people and Y is as many as I want.

I usually assign 75 pts & 2 asteroids per person. so on a typical day I will have 2 Vs 2, 150/8 game that usually ends ard 1.5 hrs. Fun casual games

Public mostly. Occasional private games.

Private, but really not 100% private. Quite often some friends or relatives come, took control of one or two ships, grab a beer, roll some dices and enjoy the experience.

Our favourite way to enjoy X Wing is 300-600 pts scenario play. One play per week. Multiplayer. Soccer on TV, friendship, some beers and playing a game. Playing with your friends and not against them. I win. Cheers. I loose. Cheers.

Technically my local club counts as public but in practice I know all the players and it is not too competitive so it plays more like private games. 100/6 is the usual format although we mix it up occasionally.

I meet up with friends once or twice a year for Epic just to get the big guns out. :D

Pretty much this, but add in occasional tournaments both small and large scale.

All of them

private, casual&training 100/6, epic, and HotAC

[edit: that is not what I usually do, but so far I never played public except] public in tournaments

Not avoiding the question - I do both about evenly.

As much as possible.

Public: 1-3 nights per week. Pretty much exclusively 100/6 format.

Private: Once or twice a week. Our regular Wednesday night game is a different format each week depending on who shows up. Typically it is 200-300 points per side, 2v2 or 3v3. Sometimes epic ships are included. Sometimes we place restrictions on ships we are allowed to field, either by type or timeline. A couple of us from that group also get together from time to time just to practice our competitive builds.

HotAC: There's a good number of players locally who play HotAC at one of the FLGSs, and I've played once or twice with them, but I have since restricted myself to playing the campaign only when my wife wants to play—I don't like it as much as the other formats, and that is her favorite way to play, so I don't want to get burnt out on it.

Virtual: I haven't played on Vassal nor TS. I should probably try it out some time, but I secretly worry that I would never leave the house if I did that. ;)

I'm another all of it player. Regular club nights, playing at home and in my friends' homes and the odd trip to a F (but not so L) GS for an OP tournament these days. We play every format going at the club and at home.

I just play at my games club, although pretty much everybody there has played or has a decent collection of ships.. there is a lot of apathy towards the game, which is entirely due to "meta lists".

The running commentary at the club seems to be that the game has become increasingly worse as more and more complexity and card combos has worked its way into the game.

Due to this, I can only get a game when we agree to do non-meta stuff.

Public, but almost exclusively with friends, never with strangers. Not because I don't like meeting new people, but because our gaming group is very stable and we haven't had any new members for a few years.

We play a range of games from super epic (400+ points per player) to HotAC, to 35 point deathmatches.

About the only thing we almost NEVER do is 100/6 tournament style games. Because they're boring and suck the Star Wars out of the game.

Public 100 point games.

I play at the local shop. I know everyone so it feels more like a private game.

Public - I play at Athena Games, my FLGS, on their regular Wednesday "Flight Nights" and the unofficial "Spaceship Sundays" that happen some weeks. Mostly we play 100/6, but we've done some Epic and Escalation, and I'm currently part of a HotAC campaign. Plus they run monthly tournaments, cycling between 100 point dogfight, Hangar Bay, and Escalation formats.

Private - I very occasionally play at home, but having two hyperactive cats in the house makes this a less than ideal play environment... :)

Virtual - I play a bit of X-Wing on Vassal. I'm trying out the Vassal League for the first time, which is a lot of fun, although I need to pack in some games before the season ends...

Public, 100/6

Occasionally Epic, or other ... whatever I can get.

Private, 100/6...still trying to persuade my regular opponent to try Epic and/or HotAC (...again - we ran the intro mission once but he prefers to play Imperial and sold most of his Rebel stuff last autumn  )

Attended a tournament at one FLGS last year with him playing, but although most people were friendly it was way too intense for me [...and, I think, him - he's not mentioned trying it again]...also, I think I was the oldest there by at least ten, maybe fifteen years, so not that comfortable

Not tried Virtual...never really been much for screen-based games since the early 90's other than Privateer & Mechcommander, but may give it a go since my number of 'real' games is on the decline as things like Eldritch Horror have taken over our gaming meets...
