What do you want (for a cool X-wing game)?

By heychadwick, in X-Wing

I'm tired of reading all these posts about people wanting fixes and nerfs. I'm tired of complaints. I want a FUN thread.

If you could pick anything for your next game of X-wing, what would you pick?

  • Epic?
  • A Mission?
  • Campaign?
  • HotAC?
  • Something crazy?

I just spent a few months play testing a game that had 4 Tie Punishers as the main focus. I had a blast! It was great to see the Tie Punisher be the beast that it should be.

For terrain in that last mission, I pulled off a bunch of dusty 40k terrain that the game store had a ton of. It game me another idea. BEGGAR'S CANYON mission! I pull out the same table. I pull out ALL the various rocks and sand formations that are at the store. There are a lot. I make a big maze of the things in the middle of the table. Spread out a bunch of packages throughout the maze. Get 4 people with 200 pts each.

  1. Rebels
  2. Imperials
  3. Scum
  4. Mandalorian (only Fang Fighters and Firesprays!)

Split up your force into 2 halves. The 2nd half can only start after 3 rounds. To pick up a package, you have to land on it and not fire. Get it off the board. Whomever has the most packages at the end wins! If you hit a wall, you take a damage and then turn towards the most realistic way where you won't hit a wall the next turn. Maybe make it a crit?

I just see lots of ships flying all over and blasting the crap out of each other! Take mostly generics. Take ships with Auxiliary firing arcs. Have fun with it!!

If you could make up a game or have fun with a game, what would you do? What type of an X-wing game would make you cackle to see on the table? What would be just stupid fun to have with friends?

Looking at epic games and at "tactical" games based around objectives of some kind for some of my new fun.

Of course, I'm also doing HotAC at work on our lunch breaks so I'm getting that taste as well. Yes, I've been that guy posting photos to the tyderium FB page about the adventures of Dilbert and company.

Now, at home my game table is only big enough to allow a single 3x3 mat plus space for the other bits to play, so I'm trying to figure out what's the biggest number of points we can allow on a 3x3 before it becomes too unmanageable. I might find that and declare mini epic events. My biggest "problem" with 100 point xwing is I never get to fly all my ships if i want to win. My solution is to up the points per side and see what other ideas can emerge that wouldn't necessarily be efficient in standard play.

300 pts game Protectorates vs Tie Interceptors!

Dreaming... Side A one portion of the Rebel Fleet. NEBULON B. 2 x CR 90. 3 x GR 75. 24 ABXY fighters.

Side B Imperial Strike team. Interdictor Cruiser depicted a few days ago in this Forum. 2 x Raider. 3 x Gozanti. 36 Ties.

Dreaming...

Reenactment of the Battle of Scariff.

I'd like to see a campaign with a lot of depth. HotAC is super cool, but it really focuses on the game itself rather than the development of the story. My dream would be an official campaign pack for my FLGS that started with a HotAC-like campaign for Rebel, Imperial and Scum teams of up to six, culminating in the first battle between the three of them (maybe some sort of Capture The Flag mission). Then, use the unique pilots developed in combination with a ton of generics to play out a campaign spanning the Aturi Cluster.

I'm all for a conversion kit between X-wing and X-wing 2.0, letting you keep all your models valid, but introducing different kinds of attack and defense dice to deepen the strategy.

HotAC. I lost the leader position last game, sacrificing my ship for the team!

Or just a fun, casual game. Two janky lists, maybe 3 X-Wings, or once more one of my dozens of A-B-X-Wing lists. Or my outmaneuver list: ARC with Tailgunner and Outmaneuver, Wedge with Outmaneuver and a third ship (probably Jake). And then I have some cards I really want to use once, e.g. R3 or Cassian (crew). So many things to try!

I took off work tomorrow to do some crazy X-wing stuff. It's my birthday today but who wants to take off on a Thursday?

Anyway, I just finished painting my Yuuzhan Vong coralskippers for my homebrewed Skirmish at Helska IV mission. I made a full damage deck and Dovin Basal energy system for it, borrowing from all over the web with some ideas of my own thrown in for good measure. I spent months, off and on, on it.

I finally finished my HOTAC components. They're all professionally printed, laminated and/or glued to millboard. The turrets are magnetized. The book is in color and spiral-bound. Making this stuff with OCD is no light endeavor. It took nearly all of my free time for about a month.

Also, I got an FFG Hoth playmat, Battlefield in a Box turrets (for the ion cannon) and a 3D printed shield generator from Etsy for a Hoth mission of some kind that I still need to work out the details on.

Pics to follow soon.

Uh, huh-huh...words

(1) Battle of Hoth Ground Assault

(2) T-16s, T-47s, and Bespin Cloud Cars

Team Epic. 2 players (or even 3) at 200 points per player. Maybe even assign "unit duties;" one player is capital ships (plus large ships, to round out points), one is the bomber squadron, one is fighter support. Fly together or die together!!

Love the Beggars Canyon idea, maybe with Sandcrawlers as moving obstacles ??? ;)

This is a very doable scenario, as long as you Don't mind switching to a different scale and rule set. Just saying. ;) [/tongueincheek]

I have really wanted to do a tournament/league structure for a long time where everybody composes their own 500 PT fleet, and then you pair up against an opponent and each of you sends 100pts of ships from your fleet to face off. Any ships that get blown up are gone from your fleet forever. Continue until only one player has any ships left.

There are some logistical issues with how to run such an event, but I still think it would be fun.

Edit:

I also want to do a tournament where after each round you swap lists with your opponent. That would really let you see who the good pilots are, or at least the ones who are capable of doing well with any list you give them. And it makes list building interesting- do you build a good list, knowing that you'll probably only get to use it once and then it will be in the hands of other players for the rest of the tournament? Or do you build a gimmicky list that will be difficult for your opponents to figure out?

Once again, there are some serious logistical problems with such an event. It would probably only work on Vassal and I don't have the time to dedicate towards such an extensive Vassal event (or the clout needed to get such an event going).

So.....I got to play my mission yesterday! We only used 100 per person, but had 4 side.

Some of the most fun I've had in X-wing in a while. I had a blast!!!

Looks like a blast. How many womp rats were bull's-eyed during that mission?

Any the giant focus and evade tokens ... they look like mines!

Here is one my buddy and I did as a big final showdown before I left Colorado a few months back. It was insane! The lone TIE Phantom was a proxy for the 5th Striker which hadn't come in yet.

By the end of 4 turns it was clear it was going to be a solid Imperial victory. I had 15 ships left mostly at full health to his 6 ships which were mostly at half health or less.

Literally just come up with this idea reading this post. And as I think of it it's evolving into a mix of HotC and the Firefly board game.

"Smugglers Run"

Start with a basic freighter, and level it up doing smuggling missions. The more notorious a smuggler you become, the bigger the Imperial presence on your missions.

Obviously if you're going to get caught you can always dump your cargo. But seeing as you hire crew as opposed to "buying" them with xp, you'll have nothing at the end of the job to pay them with. You may have to take on more valuable cargo on your next job or risk them leaving your crew if they don't get their cut. (you only get one shot with named crew). The problem with carry valuable cargo... you'll have pirates to deal with as well as the Empire.

So yeah, I'd love someone to make a campaign like that. Would be great fun to pimp out a YT. Could even make the last mission the Kessel Run. :D

All of the previous suggestions are excellent and I'd love to play any or all of them.

But what I really need to have a cool X-Wing game is time! And then for other players to also have time. 1 ship each, 100pts (and tournaments too), 200, 300, 1200...HotAC, special missions and all the rest!

I'm craving some epic. I would easily jump onboard with a story driven scenario though and terrain always makes it easier to immerse yourself into the narrative.

I might surprise the Xwing group Tuesday and drag in the Death Star run again.

Oh, and we did record the game. My buddy will probably post it online. I won't spoil the ending, but it was close. One player was racing off with 2 packages towards victory.

Seems like Mario Kart + Beggar's Canyon has some great thematic potential for a classic X-Wing racing game.

Add a few turrets (Tuskens on the ridge) and a few womp rats (shoot for a bonus) and you have something fun.

Just need a hopped-up T-16!

So what I do is a bit simpler, because my game store only has enough room for people to use one map, but we/I do one of several things.

A. each person has to fly one ship, with certain limits (one such game was TIE bombers W/O title or gamma Vets. VS. Y-wings W/O TLT [and maybe title too] VS. G1-A. Tons of fun, and only takes one map.

B. Each player picks two pilots for the opponent to put in their list (one list was two ps3 phantoms and 2 low PS strikers) leads to interesting things for each player, and really challenges your list building abilities.

C. I just say heck with winning and fly the T65s anyway. Or just fly bad lists for fun. my goal is just generally to lead my opponent to forget one interaction in my list, and end up giving me a ship.

D. We play a Champaign occasionally, being either a more RPG based thing with Imperial Assault mixed in, or we are about to start a strategy thing similar to Corellian conflict.

I've been meaning to fly missions with people for a while, and haven't gotten to it yet, but they look like so much fun.

I'd recommend Heroes of the Aturi Cluster, then. You can get up to 6 people playing on one 3x3 map. Also, you all fly either X-wings or Y-wings to start off with. If you haven't looked into it, it's the bee's knees.

Yah DAT!!!
