Seriously FFG?

By flightmaster101, in Runewars Miniatures Game

I am going to use Terra Tiles or the Realm of Battle board anyway but if I was to buy a mat from FFG I would prefer it to be 6 x 3. Each to their own.

I also find it pretty weird that they choose to sell 3x3 mats labeled for their 6x3 game.

For x-wing/armada I can appreciate it since one is 3x3 and the other 6x3 it kind of makes sense. But this feels like a last minute decision. Im guessing there will be other designs released later on so players can choose which to buy and combine for a variety of designs.

Ill agree that whatever the case, I can never quite ignore the seam running down the middle when combining two mats and I will always MUCH prefer playing on a one-piece mat. Luckily I have a 6x4 DCS neoprene swamp mat just waiting for its runewars inhabitants :D

Based on the article, it sounds like what they really wanted to release was a mat that dual-purposed with the fervent Dust players.

I do share the disappointment. I imagine that the reason to only sell 3x3 mats its related to the price. A 6x3 mat, would be a hard sell at twice the price and a lower price could alienate 3x3 mat buyers of other games. But it really is a very low profile decision. You force your player base to go to third parties to buy the proper solution. I am talking of experience in this. I play Armada and even after spending hundreds of euros on Armada I bought a 6x3 mat from another company. Because it is the way the game should be played.

And if they don't sell the 3x6 matt's you want, you go to another company that does. And as long as I'm shopping elsewhere for products they don't supply, I might as well buy extra dials (because they don't give/sell enough) for all the formations that they sell Trays for. And as long as I'm buying stuff from other companies, I might as well buy other models and figures, I mean, I could just use/borrow my friends rulebook, and photocopy his Upgrade Cards, right? Now I just have to look into getting some Trays 3D printed...

But I WILL be playing this game, because I love what I've read about it so far!

It does seem weird they released a 3' x 3' mat.

I'm almost certain it has to do with retail issues, or packaging and shipping them. I honestly can't think of another reason why they'd do this.

I'm pretty sure they're made in China.

No, they are not.

As a long time Armada player I used to be one of those that wanted an FFG 6x3 mat, but I don't now and I don't think I will in the future want a 6x3 for Armada. For Runewars they did the right thing.

Why?

Simple, in Armada you can switch things around, one side a theme and the other a star field. Having the same flexibility for Runewars I view as a good thing.

While I would want a basic 6x3 mat, I'm just as fine with two 3x3 mats. I can use them for skirmish games and even for Malifaux.

Indeed - if I remember correctly, FFG made a big thing about the fact that they were printed in house when they brought out their first playmats.

I checked they are made in the USA at an FFG facility.

Which begs the question: why do they put the, on the boat?

(and before 50 people reply thinking that's a serious question, it's sarcastic and rhetorical)

While they're printing the actual mats, they may be printing the cardboard boxes they are sold in somewhere more economical, like China...

Let's be clear, and read my words. I'm not surprised I'm disappointed. Yes I have a solution for Armada and I was hoping (not expecting, not demanding) they would make the mat equal to their regulation game area.

I get it's not the same as if FFG made it, but these guys are good and do custom 6x3 mats. I bought one specifically for this game and am very happy with the quality.

I was seriously considering these - the artwork on them is great in the pictures. It would cost AUS $120 to have a 6 x 3 "mousepad" mat from these guys (including shipping to Australia).

A 3 x 3 FFG Mat retails for AUS $80...

Even shopping around to get a better price on the FFG mats, I'd still be ahead financially with the DeepCut and the mat would be a continuous 6 x 3, not two separate mats...

If you've got any pictures of your mat you could share I'd certainly appreciate it!

Too big to attach the picture here.

I don't recommend the icy-frost design it has a very bad resolution. Otherwise the prairie design is good, I like it. I got a 4'x6' and I will cut or draw some lines to mark the real area.

I can only agree that the DeepCutStudios playmats are awesome!

I have one 6x4 Swamp mat and one 4x4 Orbital Snowfield, both in neoprene and the quality is outstanding! I have the luck of living within the EU so shipping isnt too hefty but its still a good chunk of cash to spend on "just" a playmat but for me it increases the joy of playing greatly and well worth the investment IMO.

I would not hesitate to recommend DCS mats to anyone looking for it!

Deepcut mats are far superior to anything I have seen FFG put out so far. They are extremely resistant to wear, tear and dirt. They have great quality prints on them that look good even at a short distance. I can recommend them fully.

Sounds good I'm really thinking about getting one of their 6x3 mats.

Here's another vote for Deepcut mats. I can't quite remember the name of the two that I have but they are excellent quality and the design is top notch. It's just so convient to have a battlefield rolled up in a case, ready to be dropped in an instant. Since I already have a 6x4 I'm excited to see FGG put out a 3x3. Seriously, if people are complaining about having a bigger mat available just think: you do, and probably better quality than what FFG will put out (Just being honest. Don't kill me FFG gods)

I really like that "frostgrave" mat. So much so I'm thinking of basing my Daquan in snow now and playing on that mat.

I'm pretty okay with it, myself. Nice mats are expensive, and this one is no exception. For probably at least the first month or two, all my games will be skirmish, since I'm only planning to buy one core box and the expansions won't be out for a bit. So I'm going to buy one mat now, then buy a second one in a few months when I'm ready to play full-sized games. Spreads out the cost a bit. Those Deep Cuts mats look nice, but including shipping, it'll cost more to get the mat than buy an entire core set, and I just can't justify that right now. Maybe down the road at some point, but for now I'm happy buying an FFG mat, one half at a time.

Well it's a little bull that you need to buy 2 of them to play in the correct size. In Armada the mats are actually for X-wing, just check the boxes.

However so many of runewars players are like me I think and have played warhammer or warmahordes so we already have 6/4 play areas. It's not that hard to mark one of those tables so that u got 6/3. I will probably make a new table, it's part of the fun for me. Sure not everyone is an experienced wargamer but it's pretty easy to make you own mat/table for scraps of what 2 ffg mats will cost ya and there is a ton of guides online.
