For the folks who have gotten a few games in: how long are games taking to play? At what point size? Also, how is set up going? I imagine that balancing objectives, deployment, and terrain decisions can take a bit more thought than laying out asteroids for X-Wing.
Playing Time
It is comparable to a game of Armada as far as time. I've found the decision making is easier than Armada, though.
In my experience, the rounds are shorter than armada rounds, but there are more of them. (8 instead of 6) comes out very similar to slightly shorter total time for RW.
I've only played a couple skirmish games so far, but my friend and I are brand new and we played them both in less than four hours. Not bad for learning games. I'd guess full-size games won't take more than a couple hours, and will often be an hour and a half.
I think the rules for setup are easy enough that there won't be a lot of overthinking it. In two learning games I felt like I came to grips with my units' capabilities and weaknesses pretty quick, so contemplating actions shouldn't be too bad. There's some room for AP when it comes to second guessing your opponent, and trying to win the initiative, but this is still one of the fastest miniature games I've played. Certainly the fastest rank and file game I've ever played.
Everything is really easy to setup and to play. It's such a streamlined system with depth to it (maybe not now but there's potential). For my games they have lasted no longer than 4 hours but they seem to go by very quickly. I guess that means I'm having fun
Side note: they were 100pt skirmishes as my second box hasn't gotten here yet.
Once both players know the timings, a game seems to get out of the way in an hour and a half or so.
A little shorter than the average relaxed Armada game.
