The Dusty Nomads IC

By Benjan Meruna, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

On smaller worlds, a holoboard posted at a spaceport works well as a means of communication between spacers who frequent the same ports as well as a method of notification by local law and advertising.

On larger worlds, apparently, it's a chaotic mess. Stray bits of announcements regarding grand opening and firesales (sometimes for the same business) intermingle with bounty notices, local news, missing person posters, transport jobs, and the like.

Sorting through them them isn't an overwhelming task, but without anything to filter out the noise it's difficult to find anything in particular.

"Sorry Suga..."

Vic manages to get out still thinking about rearranging the Weequay's face.

He is about to say something but decides to just leave it alone.

He follows Shishi over to the board and gives it a look over. He scans it for cargo runs... And then looks over at the low end bounties that might be do-able and put themselves in the Hutt's good graces.

"Let's see if there are any small time scumbags we can nab for that Hutt. Maybe get on his good side"

He deliberately avoids a few promising notices because the guilty in question's guilt seemed questionable.

Melonie, feeling guilty for not demonstrating proper Teamwork and Frendship Among Crew, bends down to give him a hug, "Awwwww, it's okay Vic!"

She straightens and scours the board herself for any help wanted ads that look like they come from Desperate Citizens. "...But you still owe me those drinks."

As Melonie gives Little Vic a hug Shishi catches the fur ball grinning madly, they exchange a knowing glance and Shishi lets out a snort of a laugh. "I wonder if anyone needs some technical assistance, even that Hutt?"

Shishi starts putting through all their searches, hopefully there's some money to be made on this rock.

Kara joins the others at the board, and starts browsing for something that would allow her to see the city, it would be interesting to explore.

Vic and Melonie scan the board together, finally managing to agree to three bounties that looked reasonable:

  • Queeyo, a Rodian gangster who apparently made off with the "property" of Gruggan, a female Zeltron dancer. The post claims that "Ulianna" was taken against her will, and a bounty if offered for both parties, through Queeyo's the same alive or dead. Proof in form of hand or head is required in the latter case, so ample use of explosives is cautioned against.
  • Grodokka the Wookiee, a frelance bounty-hunter himself, wanted alive by the local authorities for murder of the Trandoshan Slyssk.
  • Jer'jani, a Twi'lek pilot who is wanted alive for questioning about her role in a recent robbery.

Kara sees a few official tours that look like good sources of history, most of them starting sometime in the morning and going until lunch. She also sees a few less...official looking ads for tours that seem a bit rickier, but might also offer different (and possibly more authentic) insights. There's also a few courier jobs offered by Figg Excavations, a mining company (and obviously part of the Figg conglomerate) that recently lost quite a bit of face when it came to light they were hiring pirates to hit their own convoys to have reason to split from the Mining Guild.

As Shishi scans the board for tech jobs, he notices a quick flash of a face that looks oddly familiar. before he can fully recognize it however, the ad or notice attached to the face (as well as the face itself) disappears, as if suppressed.

"Oooh," Melonie says, looking at the bounties. "Look! A couple ran away to be together!" she points at the Rodian and Zeltron bounty. "We could help them! I mean, they'd probably pay for help getting off world, right?"

"Umm, Mel, we are supposed to be getting in the Hutts good books, not pissing him off! Besides, who do you think has more money? A couple of runaways or a Hutt"

Melonie pouts at the accurate comment. "Well... maybe we can help them escape and charge them a hand or something? Then we can take the hand to the hutt. That way we'll get paid, get in his good graces, and help that poor dancer escape."

"..." the deadpan stare Shishi gives the seemingly naive Human says more than enough about how that option sits with him.

"Look, that one is probably beyond even The Mighty Little Vic right now, that Twi'Lek should be much easier. But if you want to try I would suggest appropriate caution, either the Rodian will be violent because he wants to keep his prize, or they will both be violent in wanting to stay together"

Melonie rolls her eyes, "And a robbery suspect won't be? Well what does everyone else have?"

Kara stares at Melonie for a few seconds after her conversation with Shishi ends "You do realize what they mean by 'hand' right?" she asks, hoping that she does.

Turning back to the board she sees a few interesting items "I see a few courier jobs that we could do, they would let us get an idea of the layout of the town and be easy credits, at least compared to a bounty."

Melonie looks at her, confused. "I... assumed they meant like... hand hand," she says, waving the extremity in question. "But that's better than dying, right?" She looks at the courier postings, "Oh, hey, the Figgs! Maybe we could get into their good graces, and then we'd be in a better position to negotiate a price for the lodestone, when we get it."

"Well well well, the pretty face hides at least some intelligence!" Shishi has to get his elbow up above his shoulder just to get it into her ribs with a little chuckle. "But seriously, getting a solid local connection to the Figgs sounds very sensible. Their pockets are incredibly deep, the rightful owners would likely pay well to have it returned... in one piece" the diminutive Gossam threw Kara a sideways glance. At some point she will be faced with a decision on what is more valuable, the Figgs money or the possibility of new planets, I hope she is ready when the time comes.

While Shishi speaks, he searches for the notice that was attached to a familiar face. Unfortunately, malicious code implaneted in the board deletes the holo before he can get a good look at it. Thinking quickly, he downloads the text of the notice to his datapad before it, too, is erased off the board.

Looking at the recovered text, he sees:

WANTED: Victor 'Big Vic' Fergut. He has been falsely claiming association with his mightiness Gruggan the Hutt. The ones who bring this Weequay to Gruggan for justice will be moderately rewarded. Any who turn him over the starport authorities will be grudgingly tolerated.

"Ahh crap guys, check this out! Those Weequay have no association to Gruggan... do you think we could still catch them and get our credits back?"

Melonie sticks her tongue out at Shishi's teasing and reads the notice. "Dammit, I bet I could have gotten his number. We could try and find him, or draw him out. If someone takes off, I bet another ship will land soon, as busy as the port is. We could wait and see if they repeat the scam."

"Decent plan, I wonder if any of the other nearby docks are already vacant or about to be. We could hang out there for a bit, see if we can't jump them. That would kill 2 counch birds with one stone."

"Worse comes to worse, we know where they get their drinks," Melonie points out. "If we don't catch them now, they'll probably be there tonight." She looks at Kara and Vic, "Now I know Vic will go for payback, right?" she cajoles.

"Give me a minute, my other 2 Droids could prove useful" Shishi scurries up the loading ramp and gets his other two Droids with their nice chunky wrenches "come on you two buckets, lets go 'fix' a few Weequay"

"That two bit batha ******* ******* poodo eating ****! Im gonna get that scumbag, **** right I wanna..."

"Let's go get them." Kara said looking around to see in they were still visible, despite the unlikelihood of it. "It looks like they want 'Big Vic' alive, so we can't kill him, if we want the money." she says looking at Vic. "No mention of the others, but bringing them in too might mean a bonus."

"Come on Mel, let's go get your money back! What scumbags take money from a lil lady like yourself!"

"Yes!" Melonie punches the air, excited to finally have something that everyone can agree on (just like a real crew!). She pats her blaster, "We can always stun them. Or the Triplets can hit them over the head with a wrench or something and then we can take them to Gruggan." She frowns a bit at the idea of doing a Hutt's dirty work, but then remembers that the weequay called her 'sweetlips' and is suddenly fine with throwing them to the slug. She reminds herself it's for the good cause of stealing the lodestone.

Vic walks up to Melonie and gives her a light hearted, light punch in the arm.

"Its ok... Everyone gets hosed, especially The first few times around the block... Anyways see this... Uh this right here...?"

He finds and extracts between silver chains a dogtag with a large tooth strapped to it. He holds it up for her to see...

"After getting super screwed... Well this big almost yellow hued trando, big fragger, frelling huge... Well him and his buddy start getting loud acting like they own the place. Well shizz happened and eventually I got my ass whooped... However I ripped this tooth out of his frelling face, and took out his buddy... He never came back to that side of town again... I won... I make it a point to win a loss... You get me? Let's get to it and go win this loss..."

He stops gesticulating and looks into Mel's eyes with exaggerated puppy dog eyes.

"...plus I think you could use some Weequay tooth earings..."

He smiles sadisticly
