A somewhat silly premise, I know - A campaign around the whole being abhumans. The spawn of a silly conversation, I ran with it, and ended up creating it.
To begin with, they don’t start with a Warrant of Trade - They have to go steal a 200 year old one that was about to be awarded, but never was. This allows for me to limit what they can do right off the bat - and helps introduce my newcomer to 40k without overloading them with choice.
So, groundwork I did:
-
I made sure to make a “hub” for them to get fresh abhuman crew “easily” - A spacehulk near the screaming vortex known as Blackreach. They may be able to get other abhuman crew in other locations, or may be able to find other accepted strains of abhumans in their travels, but I felt I needed a solid “This is where you go to get crew”
-
Questioned their background to get a number of characters, factions and places that I can “sprinkle in” once they’re settled down. That way, they feel apart of everything. Their pasts affect their futures. Adapted the campaign “Tattered Fates” - It’s a solid book, even if it’s meant for Dark Heresy. Plenty of chance to rub shoulders with nobles, score good deals and (most likely) cause trouble that’ll haunt them off world.
-
Started work on a “free range” campaign - setting up a colony. The premise is already there - Blackreach is rather close to warp storms, and they seem to be closer. The whole reason for getting a Warrant of Trade is so they can set up a colony without issue.
With all that said, the first session went well. They were able to recover a number hints from the handout (A chapter from an autobiography of a maid who survived the manor attack 200 years ago) as well as find some other items. It was streamed, and the video is: https://youtu.be/iUtmrnfynn4
With all that said, my posts goal I guess is twofold.
First, what would people I suggest I do, get or read as prep? I found that getting plans for the manor was handy, and have most BC/DH/DW/RT/OW books, so if there’s any of those that you suggest I read, I’ll do so. Fan material is also totally fine - I have Genestealer Cults, Legends of the Expanse and Abhuman Character guide (duh), as well as some of the custom campaigns (though I find that those often have interesting ideas, so more of those are always good~)
Second is to anyone that watched the video - Any sort of feedback? While I know I could prep forever and a day, it can often just go out the window in the face of Actual players, and so end up simply making a few notes on what people are like and what might happen, and play more reactive than proactive.
