Let's NOT fix the X-Wing

By Stevey86, in X-Wing

People are sick of nerf and fix threads? Fine.

Let's hear your T-65 success stories and show everyone that the games titular ship is still worth taking.

N.B. Your list must contain a minimum of 1 T-65 that is NOT Biggs.

Wedge Antilles
Push the Limit
R7-T1
Vectored Thrusters

Luke Skywalker
Predator
R2D2
Integrated Astromech

Biggs Darklighter
Determination
R2-D6
Integrated Astromech

This list has gone 5-0 at my local club (though admittedly I've not run it in about 3 months).

No one ever anticipates just how manuverable Wedge is. And it's always funny when they think they've pushed a crit through on Biggs only to see you throw it away! :P

I have always liked Tarn Mison + R7 + Integrated Astromech for a fairly cheap 25 pt. wingman. Or now M9 if you can afford the one extra point.

Internal changed to Integrated

Wes Janson (VI, R3-A2, Integrated) - Biggs( R4-D6, Integrated) - Corran (VI, R2-D2)

This list is run by one of the guys at my FLGS and he's really good with it. It can be brutal

I once beat a player who made the cut at worlds with 4 X-wings. 3 Rooks and Wedge with Swarm tactics.

I really need to pick that list up again. Packs more of a punch then you'd think.

Also need alt art Swarm Tactics, dang it.

I have actually had some solid success with luke and R2D2 just as a little casual ship. I ran this with a falcon and it beat brobots by a solid margin.

I dont neccisarilly know if the T65 needs a full fix as much as a little tweek for options like the bomber in imperial veterans. Do long range scanners and tie shuttle make it all that much better? Not really. But it opens up a whole new realm of builds and I'd like to see them do something roughly similar for the x wing. For example, a dual card title with s foils open or closed that either increases its dogfighting ability or its tankyness, allowing it to further be the all around ship it is supposed to be. I have to say though, without R7-T1 the dial isn't looking great for its points.

X wing is about positioning and unpredictability. The T65 is consistent and doesn't position all that well. Though it does have pilot abilities to make up for it and arguably the best upgrade slot in the game in the form of astromechs

T65 is not a great ship, but its named pilots are so good that it ends up about average.

Save the X-Wing. Save the dream.

That's why they pop so easily!

They really should be building them with titanium alloy, not hope. :P

Went 4-0 in a local tournament with this list:

Jess Pava (R2-D6, Draw Their Fire, IA)

Tarn Mison (R7, IA)

Biggs (R4-D6, IA)

Rookie Pilot (R2, IA)

I also made Day 2 of Kashyyyk with this variation:

Jess Pava (R2-D6, Draw Their Fire, IA)

Wes Janson (Adaptability, R2, IA)

Biggs (R4-D6, IA)

Captain Rex (Sabine's Masterpiece, Jan Ors)

Just play EPIC... and you'll be happy with all of the ships.

Only thing that'll get me doing that is if I can take 10 Gunboats against a Corvette. ;)

No, I think the E-Wing is the one with the internal astromech.

Good catch! Integrated Astromech!!!

Fixing it now.

I've had a blast and only lost once in seven flights...if Porkins dice work, he's unbeatable.

Porkins (30 points): Predator (3), R2 Astromech (1).

Skywalker (34 points): Expert Handling (2), R2-D2 (4).

Wedge (36 points): R2 Astromech (2), Crack Shot (1), Proton Torpedoes (4), Guidance Chips (0).

I enjoy XXBBZ or any variation of that. Simple and effective.

4 T-70s are known as Kraytonite.

Hope is the only thing that gets Biggs out of bed in the morning.

Wedge Antilles (29)
Predator (3)
R2 Astromech (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)

Wes Janson (29)
Veteran Instincts (1)
R3-A2 (2)
Integrated Astromech (0)

Jan Ors (25)
Adaptability (0)
Dorsal Turret (3)
Kanan Jarrus (3)

Total: 100

It's a rip roaring good time!

I have regularly used two versions before integrated astomech became a thing:

- Wedge + R2 astromech + veteran instincts

- Luke Skywalker + R2D2 + Elusiveness

Nasty squads I used were:

- Wes Janson, VI, R2, IA

- Wedge Antilles, Opportunist, R2, IA

With either:

- Luke Skywalker, Opportunist, R2, IA

or exchanging Luke and the R2 on Wes for:

- Keyan Farlander with Opportunist and advanced sensors

I soon wish to try:

- Wedge Antilles, Vectored Thrusters, Expertise, and some astromech

Or

- Wedge Antilles, R3, Engine Upgrade, Expert Handling

Combination I wish to try:

- Garven Dreis, R2-D6, Expert Handling, Vectored Thrusters

- Red Squadron Pilot, R5 astromech, Vectored Thrusters

I have never, ever , flown Biggs....

People underestimate Luke with R2-D2

Throw a shield upgrade and lone wolf on him and you got a tanky little ship.

I tend to play imperial at tournamnets but i've been meaning to play more X-wings when I can get some casual games in.

He's just not as fun as the others!

Well... actually.... that is the reason

I just can“t bring myself to invest points in a pilot clearly meant to die first. Somehow, it feels like a waste

Maybe if I have to protect some large transport, but just to make sure other fighters survive longer 25+ points feels weird....

I've actually been doing quite well with Luke + Expertise + R5X3 + VTs

Use him as a flanker, not a jouster. An xwing with focus/targetlock (sorta, expertise) is pretty lethal and long as you dont let him get converged on. R5X3 lets you dive right through rocks or even land on them and not give a flying *beep* for a turn, and its amazing how much that throws people off. Since i dont have IA on this list, it doesnt conflict with that card (which is its usual issue)

Luke is pretty evasive despite being a 2agi ship. Tbh the reason i picked Luke for this instead of Wedge is Luke tends to have this stigma that hes terrible, so people dont gun for him like they do Wedge.

I find that bringing Jan along for the ride is almost as good as bringing Biggs.... everyone wants her to die really fast and she usually gets focused fired quick like, even if there is a R1 shot against Wedge.

I'm really enjoying this thread.

It seems to me that the optimal build is for two X-wing Aces + a support ship whether it be Biggs, Jess or another ship type like Jan on a HWK.

The X may not need a fix after all, instead our point of view needs to be fixed. It's a good ship with a lot of hidden tricks just waiting for a patient player to suss out. I'm going to field a pair of T-65 my next trip to the game store. I may not win (because of my own low Pilot Skill,) but I'm certain to bloody some noses, as it were.

Hmm... maybe to celebrate/honor the original STAR WARS film's 40th Anniversary, I'll fly classic T-65s all month long. I'd encourage you to do it at least once as well.

I'm an imperial player through and through, but I'm totally with you! Let's all fly T-65s! :D

It doesn't have to be every game right?
