Morality and Conflict Questions

By GandofGand, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

So I play in two regular Mixed-line Games (FaD/AOR and EoE). In the Living Campaign we DO use both Duty and Morality, but in the home Game our GM is NOT using Morality and we have multiple Force-Users including one player who routinely does shady shenanigans with his Force Powers. I've argued that one of the reasons we NEED to be using Morality to reflect the fall to the Darkside but he's not buying it. So I'm looking for a better argument to convince him to start using it.

Dude! He's the GM! He can use various rules (or not so) to his discretion.

However, I'm sure someone else will come up with a better argument than I did . . .

Even if the GM doesn't want to use the Morality mechanics (that's fine) I think you're going to lose a significant part of the "heart"/feel/point of Star Wars if you just ignore the dichotomy completely.

Your GM should at least handle it narratively, IMO. Using the white/black pip "access" is critical to the Force Powers being balanced. If the player can use black pips without consequence then the Force - as a tool to get things done - doubles in power, whereas non-Force Isers are the same.

I agree its up to GM discretion but it means we get to use Darkside pips as well as Lightside and unless my math is off that effectively doubles our odds of pulling of Force Powers...one one hand it makes some degree of sense at least with experienced force users, but it also means no consequences for using them...

Is he just ignoring the conflict/morality scale, or the strain and destiny point cost of using DS points?

All of the above...8P

Ignoring the Morality scale isn't inherently a problem since it isn't required for any sort of balance and the light/dark aspect can be handled by handwave, but ignoring the strain/DP aspect of using off-side pips is definitely a balancing mechanic. No wonder he's got multiple force-sensitives going.

Heh my new character is going to be one of the Force-users...and I WANT to use the Morality systems and inherent rules...partly because of the guy whose always Influence to fark with people...the other player is a Shadow and that player isn't really an issue...but yeah Force is powerful enough as it is...but without restrictions why play anything else?...other than role-play reasons...

Yep. Time to roll out with a dark side Sith Murder Hobo. Enjoy!

I played in an online game once where the GM wasn't interested in keeping track of Morality and wasn't allowing F&D careers. The reason I wanted to use Morality was because I was playing a Gand Findsman (bounty hunter/survivalist with the exile spec and a couple powers to help me track targets). I talked it out with the GM and they said they weren't going to keep track of my Morality at all, so I got permission to track it myself. This of course would require one to be very honest with how they use Morality but really if you're going to cheat in an RPG, ya got other issues to be worried about.

In my experience, there's just no arguing with the folks who aren't happy with Star Wars' mystical-moral philosophies. Someone on this forum once mentioned the difference between playing a Star Wars RPG and a sci-fi RPG with the trappings of Star Wars, and if your GM insists on running the latter, then that's the game you're playing. Unless you're willing to find another group, you just gotta roll with it.

Well I'm not planning on going down the Darkside path...at least not intentionally...I'll just stick to my concept and let the other player keep doing horrible things until he breaks the campaign...

@GroggyGolem Funny that you mention the Gand Findsman, I'm playing exactly that in the Living Camapign that DOES track Morality but I'm playing a Seeker Pathfinder/Executioner and just picked up "Seek" as my first Force Power. We're playing between Eps 4 and 5 and the concept was a Former Imperial Zookeeper who killed an Imperial Officer for abusing his Animal Charges...basically cares about Animals more than People. He's currently a Paragon of the light but I am fully hoping for an opportunity for him to go down the path of darkness after runnign into some situation that really makes him go on an Imperial-Murdering Rampage...8D
