FFG has released a nerf to flotillas!
Some Armada players have found that the high percentage of fleets that contain flotillas to be a problem. Data proves that flotillas appear extremely often, and not only are they in a large percentage of fleets but those fleets often contain more than one. This has lead to a public outcry about the seemingly non playtested and game breaking aspects of these ships.
There are many aspects of the flotilla that have lead to many opinions on how to fix them. Some focus on it's ability to act as a cheap activation, or carrier. While others are disgusted by it's ability to safely fly a commander around aka a “lifeboat”. There are some additional, more specific, complaints but most can be organised into these two main groups.
FFG has heard the concerns about flotillas and has taken action. Ladies and gentleman I present a plethora of options straight from the minds of the design team!
First up we have H9 Turbolasers for 8 points you can all but guarantee the destruction of those pesky little carriers. By granting an accuracy by losing a damage rendering that annoying scatter useless, you can assuredly show that cheap activator who is boss!
Next up we'll take a look at a pair faction specific options. The Home One title for the rebels and Captain Jonus for the imperials.
The home one title is a 7 point upgrade for the MC80 Assault and Command Cruisers. It allows another friendly ship within 1-5 to change a die to an accuracy. Best part only this is you don't have to spend or lose anything! Those pesky reds coming up blank? Not anymore, just change one to an accuracy! Fleet wide scatter denial. Delicious!
On the imperial side we have the Tie Bomber Ace from the Corellian Conflict box Captain Jonus. Where if a friendly ship is attacking a ship within distance 1 of Jonus that ship can change one die to an accuracy. Again awesome and this is on a mobile platform even better. Pair that with his grit keyword and he is a great option for any imperial fleet. Especially for those in the business of hunting those little scatter bugs.
Continuing on we have the Intel officer. Nothing can be as annoying as getting a small flotilla lined up in your primary arc, rolling tons of damage with no accuracy. Doubly annoying when you realize you didn't bring a way for guaranteed accuracy. What is an admiral to do? Let me introduce you to the Intel officer. This handy little guy let's you choose a defence token of your target ship and if your opponent uses it the defence token will be discarded. That's right one and done! And this can go on any ship!
These are just some of the options coming out of FFG. Enjoy your games and remember if there are 7 flotillas on the table and you consistently see too many of them it might be worth a shot to counter your local or regional meta and add a dedicated flotilla hunter to your fleet. Change is good you may not be able to fly or build the same way you did in wave 2 but who wants that!?
