Be prepared for a slow, stale meta

I'm not trying to be negative. I quite like the game, but with expansions coming out months after the core, things are going to feel stale quickly. I'm just saying be ready for it.

I still look forward to playing again every single day!

but you are being negative, that statement is basically saying this game is going to be boring. You have enough models to mess around with army builds with 2 cores, cap your points low and run skirmishes or just run more small things or run with the 3 cores you mentioned, 3 cores give you a lot of army building options, and if you are that worried about being bored proxy models. But don't just go this game is stale, its not out yet but it is stale.

There's no need to get hostile. That's part of the reason I gave up on Armada.

stale
adjective: stale
  • no longer new and interesting or exciting.
    "their marriage had gone stale"
    synonyms:

hackneyed, tired, worn out, overworked, threadbare, banal, trite, cliched, unoriginal, unimaginative, uninspired, flat

Again, maybe your intent was not to be negative, but you chose an adjective with very specific negative connotations.

No one is being hostile, if you are reading mine or @Tvayumat as hostile you are misunderstanding our tone, yes at times I am hostile or ranting about things, but its mainly because I feel passionately interested in this game, its why I have been able to get people at my store interested in the game enough that they preorder it. Right now with people already worrying about the game grabbing fans and taking interest from AoS, it is disheartening that everyday there seems to be some negative post.. and as Tva said when you are a new person that hasn't heard anything about this game, you see something in the FFG news that interests you then you go and check out the online community and the first post is about a game that is unreleased already being boring...it can make you decide to not look further.

Not always true. Just as stale bread makes croutons a stale meta will make expert players. My logic; the core units will remain the center pieces of your Daqan and Waiqar armies for long time, and knowing their dials inside and out will greatly improve your ability to outsmart your opponents in tournament play.

Exactly my thoughts after the first few games. This is a good chance to learn the core units inside and out without too much interference.

Still doesn't qualify as stale IMO.

Also croutons rule.

I do not think you said anything hostile, but I've seen enough 10 page trash battles begin with posts like that one. As a person who is not 100% sold on this game, though, I was glad this thread came up. It addressed a concern I had and the responses have answered that concern. That is the way to convince people to get the game, not suppressing the expression of fears about it!

Yes, until the release of the first wave of expansions, the armies will look pretty similar since most people will get or spilt two core sets. There's only so much you can do with limit miniatures. It's the exact same situation with just about every release of a miniature game. Once we get that first release, the game will really open up.

I think Kari is pretty op in the skirmish game we're stuck with right now but I think she lose a bit of potency when you get up to 200pt games. At least to the point you can deal with her a lot easier. FOR WAIQAR!!!

Speak for yourself. I have been playing 200 point games since I got it at Adepticon. (Actually about to trade for my 3rd box set so I'll have lots of options..(and painting!)

FFGs upcoming page is frequently inaccurate. I largely don't pay attention to it till it says shipping. Their LCG cycles are all printed and shipped at the same time and only leave the warehouse at different times for marketing reasons. If the coreset and all of the initial expansions weren't printed at the same time, I largely expect the others to be all printed at the same time and will roll on time. Plus has FFG missed date after the Asmodee merger? From the products I have followed, all of their project dates have been hit post merger. The logistic company started making the trains run on time. I have a fairly high confidence we will hit infantry command expansions in May.

Now you're just bragging...I have yet to receive my first core box, so I am acting like Scrooge...bah, humbug...?

Their "on the boat" to store schedule has been very consistent with their minis games. And yes, they have missed targets since Asmodee took over.

It will be at least 8 weeks until release once the expansions move to "on the boat".

You mean aside from this box not being released by quarter 1 in time for the Adepticon tournament that had to be cancelled?

EDIT: I don't want you think I have anything against you. I know we haven't seen eye-to-eye in the range discussion, but I enjoy your contributions. I wrote this somewhat snarky comment before I realized it was you who posted it, so I hope you don't take it personally.

I actually tend to agree with the rowdyoctopus on this topic. The game is a lot of fun and I'm not bored yet with my whole half a week of playing, but I do resent the fact that wave 1 is so much later than the core set. With 2 cores, getting a full 200 point army that isn't the same every game pretty much doesn't happen. We're playing 150 till the xpacs come out to inject some forced variation in our games.

A couple of cores is something I think I can play consistently for a month or so without getting bored, but it's not enough to keep my main attention through the end of July (or whenever wave 1 gets here). That's fine from my perspective since that means my other games will get some playtime, but it is kind of a downer to have to wait so long to have more strategies to explore. Keep in mind that painting and terrain building are not my thing. I just enjoy cool minis and the actual gameplay. If you're the hobby-type then you will probably be sufficiently occupied for the next 3-4 months.

It's not a horrible thing, but it would have been significantly better with a quicker wave 1, imo. There are just so many things that are worthless till wave 1 comes. Like, upgrades on golems (no matter how many you own) are just not that great of an investment. I find that it's pretty much only rank discipline that I ever want to attach to Oathsworn. Spearmen, however, have some pretty good options right now. So it's a mixed bag that definitely feels like it's not 'complete' to me because I feel like there's not a worthwhile upgrade for certain units and stuff. That said, I think that when wave 1 comes out we'll be looking mighty fine.

TL;DR Fun game, but I agree the expansions would be really good to have for some real build variety. Game will probably improve a lot with wave 1 based on what's been previewed so far.

Nah I don't think that. I can disagree with some one and still like them. Rule discussions are just an incredibly frank topic. Plus I like being told when I am obviously wrong, or wrong in general.

Well if you are ever in the Chicago area, PM me! I'll bring my toys up to the Dice Dojo and be happy to demo / play anytime!

If I wasn't busy this weekend I'd hop in the car and get even more jealous! I want to get my hands on those minis!

I WANT THE GAME TOO D:

Well thankfully the infantry upgrade expansion is on the boat. Should see it by the end of June at the latest. Looking forward to it!

Are you in the city or the suburbs?

Dice Dojo is downtown. I game at the Wandering Dragon over in Plainfield, IL. They are running a demo event this Saturday, and then next Saturday (the 15th) I'll be pseudo-organizing a launch day open play/learn to play event. The game has a lot of interest there so far.
