Impressions from the first game!

By jek, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Fun...lots of fun. Ardus made horse burgers, then a golem punched some archers to death, then slurms mckenzie gave Kari a cold then round 8 happened and the game was over and I lost.

So first actions/modifier dial is in fact an awesome mechanic that really creates quite a bit of tension with each turn, and can make the difference between having reanimates on the field oooor having reanimates on the storage tray...those poor skeletons...

the carrion lancer is the original party worm, and he can slurp around the board frustrating your opponent and you by just narrowly avoiding everything...but man that little skeleton on him looks like he is having such a blast!

Ardus murders anything he touches, though this was where my biggest dial mistake happened and I thought he was going to get charged so I set his dial to attack...and he just stood there and was pin cushioned to death...2nd death

Archers and Blight...this is a huge mechanic and I did not use it enough...at all...In list building I realized it may be better to have a carrion lancer in each of my trays of Reanimates just to put more blight out...

But regardless of my loss, I have never had more fun playing a learning to play game. We were trying to make a Let's Play video for this but it kinda got derailed by the ridiculousness of everything going on and is now more of a blooper reel...I may throw it online though...need to see if the audio isn't garbage.

Carrion Lancer skeleton rider is officially Slurm Mckenzie and his party worm.

Great to hear gameplay is solid. My first set is getting closer to full assembly...game time soon after!

What point level were you playing? I'm working to get one Core built so we can run the Skirmish game, but we'll each have a full set of upgrades so we don't need to worry about sharing them.

My first game went about the same at a 100pt match. If I recall the Daqan forces in the care come in at 99 points and Waiqar 96 so we threw in a couple of upgrades to level it out.

I was doing the L2P scenario, from the rule book, just the simple game with the units from the core. Next time I play i will probably do a 120pt game with upgrades and the actual deployment rules as oppose to the put your stuff here deployment. Also the gameplay for us was really fast which was refreshing. Deploying a my reanimates directly across from spears and kari kinda set them up for the deathiest death... But my final impressions were just the game is a lot of fun, rules are easy to pick up, and I can't wait to play again and with other people!

Recent game Ardus was trying to circle back after ripping the cavalry to pieces. Kari was killing some archers, she refrained from killing them just so she could teleport to their backside and avoid Ardus' charge. Good times.

Not that I wasn't already excited, but I find this so incredibly heartening.

Audio be damned - go for it! (please!)

To start off, my video guy sucks and youtube's verification process defeated my partner so it is taking a bit more time to post the let's play video... aside from that, I have impressions of my second skirmish game this time not using the learn to play scenario...

Terrain adds sooooo much to this game, for example, I managed to impale 3 reanimates on some spikey bits turn one! then they pretty much stayed there tarpiting some cavalary for most of the game while Ardus chopped Kari into itty bitty wraithy pieces...then he got smashed by a rune golem, then SLURMS MCKENZIE ACTUALLY PARTIED HIS WAY INTO A CHARGE!!! HUZZAH! We were playing bounty objective, Slurms is the best bounty...hes so hard to catch (and maneuver) My archers hid in some fortified terrain and actually survived being attack by spearmen, then they shifted out of the terrain, that led to another question, I know when disengaging using the shift action you move directly away from your enemy but when leaving terrain to disengage using shift do you still move directly away from the engaging units front or can you just shift any direction, I mean the unit doesn't square to the terrain...it is confusing, or I missed something. So after escaping the wrath of spearmen my archers went back to peppering them from behind and I am a bit sad that there is no flanking bonus for ranged attacks... But Ardus killing Kari netted me the objective token and no one could catch Slurms so With only one claimed bounty I won the game on the eighth round.

It was super fun to play an objective, and I can see how these could really change the game, next up will be a full size game, though we won't have any nice mats until next week, apparently they are also street dated... :( We will see I'm hoping to either get a game in today or more painting, I need to finish painting up the party worm and Ardus...

when you shift out of terrain you dont actually shift you place your unit with its front or side edge touching the terrain.

so it wouldn't matter where your enemy engaging you is?

I'm curious why you feel the Carrion Lancer is hard to maneuver.

Well it matters in that you are disengaging them as you exit the terrain, and I don't believe you can exit the terrain and still be touching them.

this. you cant touch them while exiting but other than that you just have to have your front or side edge touching the terrain and you still get the panic token (if you would normally)

The lack of any hard turn on the Carrion Lancer makes it difficult to reposition if the unit you were hoping to engage activate first or if you miscalculate, this could entirely be just my own early impressions on getting used to it.

Ah, the lack of wheel. For a second I thought you hadn't realized you don't have to choose a blue modifier so her almost always has to turn.

no I know I can move straight just never being able to wheel, while making it feel like a worm, does not make it easy to redirect my worm...giggity

The Carrion Lancer is cool, but I also learned the hard way. He's super tough, but not super strong. Gotta get those blight counters out there to keep him effective! But I love, love, love that 4-speed move as a MODIFIER. Man, that is so cool.

I also messed up my archers. I moved my army forward too quickly, cheating my archers of 1-2 more rounds of shooting. That really cost me. In Skirmish at least, undead should store up inspiration, move slow or stay put, and shoot the crap out of those humies.

Ardus is the original juicer. Everything he touches turns to pulp. I love him, though it's hard not to be jealous of Kari and what must be the magic machine gun she carries around.

Yeah i'm thinking in most games I will have atleast one group of reanimates with a support slurm, casting out royal slurm to assist everything else...

Agreed. I wasn't interested in the support lancer at first, and now I totally get it. There's a lot of value in a reanimate unit that can spit.

Yeah especially when you aren't engaged yet, If I'm just walking I want to spit, if i'm attacking I may spit or I may cause a morale test, as morale is ridiculously devastating at times...there is so much to this game that I am just itching to trying things out...

You also need to keep moistening those Daqan to keep their inspiration tokens off.

Gold. Pure gold.
