As for the expansions, I think their price is more a reflection of the market than it is a reflection of the margins of the core set. The expansions are basically priced (per-miniature) very similarly to basic Warhammer/AoS units and the boxed set is about 20% less. Of course they also come with cards, and command tools and you need less of them for a game, but essentially we're seeing prices that are roughly in line (a bit less than overall) with what GW and others are paying.
I suppose. I think there's definitely a lot of evidence of publishers putting a lot more value in their core boxes than in expansions though. Board games, all of FFG's card and miniature core sets, GW boxed games, start collecting, and starter boxes. Every other minis company.
Maybe, the margins aren't less on a core set, but market forces demand that they cant charge as much for a core, proportionally, as they do with expansions.
