Playmats

By Felswrath, in Runewars Miniatures Game

I plan to make my own scenery, but I was going to get play mats pre-made. So far the best option I have seen has been Mats by Mars. I was planning on getting two of their overgrown cobble mats and one swamp mat. Does anyone have any other recommendations from either them or any other stores?

PS: If I go with Mats for Mars, I'll get three mats because I want that free carrying tube.

wait until FFG launches there own mats?

I got some grassy field looking felt from Jo-ann for $10 to hold me over. A little bit of paint and 3d terrain and it should look fine. I like the neoprene ones but just too expensive. If FFG puts out a really nice one at $40-$50 I might spring for it.

That felt looks great! I may just have to pick that up.

When I started playing X-wing, I picked up some black felt that had glitter all over it, looking like stars. I was thrilled when I got a neoprene mat, but that felt mat was great for my first year or so. I will probably go felt for Runewars Miniatures, too.

I still use a 5mm black felt for X-wing ... far less slippery than most mats ... does tend to pick up fluff and other cruft.

I want to pick up something nicer for Runewars, but I'm going to settle for green felt in the short term...

If you are in the USA, there is a company in Ohio called Hidden Forest that makes 6x4 and 6x3 neoprene mats for $55. Best price I've seen. Really small selection, but it's where I'm buying my Armada mat from.

Is this fact or wishful thinking!?!? I was really hoping FFG would have some 3x6 RW mats out when the games releases, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

They haven't shown product images, as far as I'm aware, but they did say at Adepticon that they will be producing mats for Runewars.

YES! This is exciting news. I hope they start pumping out all the goodies for this game soon!

If I have a 200pt army fully painted and ready for battle and FFG still hasn't released mats I'll probably go with one of these:

Grassy-Plains2-6x4-TableWar-FatMats__922

They're a bit expensive at $75, but I have played on 4x4 F.A.T. Mats and the quality is is very high.

FWIW they're using two adjacent 3x3 mats in the Learn to Play book on p.21 & p. 23...

Might not be reflective of the final product, but I guess it's a sign they're working on it.

(here's hoping they actually offer a 6x3 in the end)

I own 3 F.A.T. Mats, they are absolutely excellent. We'll use our 4' x 6' desert scape or Grassy Plains 1 for Rune Wars.

It is likely going to be a 3x3, so you will need to buy 2. Technically the rulebook supports 100 pt games on a 3x3 board if you prefer more of a "skirmish" feel. It has a small section in the back of the RRG.

My guess is that they will be priced comparable to the X-Wing/Armada mats, so $40 MSRP.

They make the mats in house, so they have a quick turn around time. They will be announced very shortly before they are available, IIRC.

Well, I hope this isn't the case. It doesn't make since to only make/sell 3x3 when the main game is meant to be played with 200pts on a 3x6.

They will likely have different designs for you to mix and match...

Hmmmm...definitely a selling point. Just not sure I'll like always having a seam down the middle.

Eh, it's not that bad. It is how Armada works.

It's like Armada. They don't make a single playmat for that one; you have to buy two X-Wing mats and put them together. I think Runewars would be the same way. However, I'm not keen on the idea of buying two different mats and sticking them together. If, for example, my Uthuk Y'llan are coming out of the Ru Steppes to assault the Mistlands, my Uthuk should be on the barren desert for their deployment and Waiqar's forces should be in the misty swamps. Having the seam down the middle means that depending on deployment zone placement, my forces may all be in the Mistlands and the undead will be in the Ru Steppes.

have FAT mats become better quality? I remember my FLGS stocking them and they started to peel apart like a month after arriving...kinda put me off of spending 7-80 bucks on them...

I think the difference in Runewars vs X-Wing and Armada is that they are already producing mats in a 3x3 size for X-Wing, so it makes sense to just say "buy a second one" for Armada. That way they don't have to make a whole new sku of product, since the backgrounds (star fields or w/e) are the same for both games.

They don't have a current 3x3 grassy field or swamp or w/e type terrain being manufactured, so to me it makes sense to just go ahead and produce Runewars mats in 3x6 size UNLESS their production facility cannot handle that for some reason. I would really prefer to buy a single mat rather than two separate ones personally, so if FFG doesn't produce one I will likely go with someone who does or manufacture my own boards.

DeepCut Studio are offering mats in Runewars size now.

I own 3 FAT mats, all are several years old now, never had any issues with the mat. Now the bag they give you... well the zipper on that sucked but who cares..

Two FAT mats, both about two years old, no issues

These are nice and price isn't bad either! Too bad it's not based out of the US. Shipping and the wait would be horrible.
