Contemplating Imperial Assualt for my social game collection, wondering about how friendly it is, and how much you need to really get out of the game

If you've played DnD or something, there is nothing stopping you as the Imperial Player from playing more in the spirit of a Game Master. I have to say, the IA core game is one of the best values out there. Due to the tree diagram of cause and effect for wins and losses, you could play through the core game several times and and never have the same campaign twice. Adding either the Hoth or Bespin boxes (as much for the extra PC choices as anything) turns Imperial Assault into a pretty solid little RPG. Not as free form as old D6 or anything, but definitely enough to keep 4 Star Wars fans occupied for a very long time.

Or even 5 :P

It sounds like a great option... cept now I'm going home and have to deal with the cousin with patience issues XD Think I'll have to stick with Vs System, Destiny, and a couple matches of Pokemon tCG(which I'll be trying for the first time)

If the Heroclix tourney falls through I definitely will give this a try tomorrow

Well, it's two months later, and it was a free afternoon (although my Destiny tourney did get cancelled). Finally got to play the learn to play mission. Figured it'd be better to bump this than make a new thread. Two of us completely new to the game gave it a go, I've read the how to play manual a few times, so I did Imperials and the other guy played the Jedi Exile and the trooper dude. Had a great time, and now that I have a handle on it, I see how if you have one solid informed player on Imperials you can teach the others pretty easy(even skipping ahead to the first campaign mission if you wanted to). Way it played was I feinted him by having 2 troopers and the officer storm the right door, where he engaged them with the Twilek, while my third trooper snuck to the left. He had his trooper raid the crate then head to the right side where his Jedi engaged my troopers, overlooking my other Stormtrooper. next turn he takes out one of my storm troopers, but I got the victory with the third one engaging the console before he could stop me.

Pretty dang fun overall, and when I get moved I hope I can get a group going on a campaign. Well and me and the shop owner are going to play a little more next week. But I won't be buying the game until I have a group to play with

remember that the FAQ states that _both_ consoles need to be interacted with in order for Imperials to win.

Whoops, well we just went off the manual. goal was to just learn the gameplay.

Well, played the first campaign mission against the store owner and a regular yesterday, I had a blast even though I lost as the empire. However we're all hoping to do a few more missions before I move. That, and they have no idea what's coming at them, they choose Generous Donations as their second mission! which should give me a good edge and a chance to take them down!

I recommend IA campaign mode as a social game. Instead of making it a competition between me as empire and my guests as rebels, I DM it like you would with an RPG and deliberately set yourself up to lose, but in a way that is as characterful, interesting and fun as possible.

With many games like this you need to spend a lot of money to keep up to date, and can only figure out if you like it after buying enough to be competitive. With IA campaign the core box has enough content to keep an average gaming group busy for 2 months. You don't even need to buy the extra blisters, as there are tokens in the box, but the blisters help.

Oh, I got it, and while I really enjoyed the game I've decided to wait on it... and ironically got something else for 2/3 of the retail that has a similar game style and less expansions to tempt me(but quicker setup) (talking about TMNT Shadows of the Past). I do hope to come back to IA eventually when I have a group though

Mansions of Madness is a similar style game to IA that requires a lot less investment and is also really cool. The way they have an app to DM that game so you can play co-op (or even alone) is really good.

Not a fan of the horror theme(mainly because the people I know wouldn't play it with me XD), and I LIKE being the overlord. That's why I went with TMNT Shadows of the Past for the moment, fun theme, more streamlined gameplay(no loot or XP), quick setup. Later on, IA is definitely on my keep an eye out for list
