Lists for New Recruits

By BanthaFather, in X-Wing

Hey guys,

I'm pretty new to the game, and I'm trying to get my local friends to get on board. I need some ideas for lists that are easy to play, and affordable to purchase. They don't have to be brilliant or clever, but they should be able to hold their own even in the hands of a new player.

By way of example, I built a list for a friend that flies a minimally upgraded Captain Oicunn and three bare-bones PS1 TIE FOs. he loves it because it flies well, puts out a lot of firepower, and requires little management.

So, what kinds of lists should I sell to my friends?

I'd start with the New Player List Guide though it might be a little dated now.

You're the best, Arschbombe. Thanks.

I found this a good read when I started:

Buy IG-2000 x 2 $60

Buy M3-A Interceptor x 1 $15

$75 - 100 point list

-IG88-B (36 Points)

Mangler Cannon (4 Points)

IG-2000 Title (0 Points)

-IG88-C (36 Points)

Mangler Cannon (4 Points)

IG-2000 Tilte (0 Points)

-Cartel Spacer (14 Points)

-Heavy Scyk Interceport (2 Points)

-Mangler Cannon (4 Points)

This is a good start for $75. IG-2000s are fun to fly. When you fly multiples in the same list their title lets them share abilities. So when you take B & C in a list they both get to shoot again with a cannon if they miss their first shot, and they both get to take a free evade action after boosting.

As you buy more expansions the IGs will be stronger, they have a lot of slots for more upgrades.

Six naked HWKs. Easy peasy. ;)

Oh, you want to actually win a game? Four X-wings can be pretty fun -- one core set and three expansions. Or consider the blue box TFA core and Heroes of the Resistance -- two T-70s plus the Falcon gives lots of options.

Welcome friend !!!!!!! You are going to want to buy a core set the question to ask is Red or Blue? Now the red or classic has some fun ships that are the backbone to imp players. The blue has some outstanding ships for both side and Rebels have BB8 which is outstanding.

Rebels - 1Blue Core and 1 Heroes of the Resistance pack give you 2 T-70s and a Falcon which is a great way to start building (This is one of the cheapest entries and is just one). I was just thinking about flying X-65's again with some T-70's. Z95 are a great ship when you need a 12 point filler. The Ghost and a Red Core will give you some great options also.

Imperials
If you get a Blue Core set and a Up Shuttle, this gives you some crazy good things to do, buying 1 Red Core and 1 Blue core will give you 4 ties which can be paired with anything else for a really solid list. I can tell you just about every imp ship is playable in the meta and for fun all of them are great. The Aggressor is going to be a hoot. The Tie Advance Proto with the Inquisitor is in such a great place right now as a budget ace and PS8 he can do some work.

Scum

A shadow caster and a protector Starfighter is a strong list. Scum can be a bit more pricy to get into unless your run 3 Protector Starfighters.

Last thought any of the box sets for all of the factions with ether core set will build you some outstanding and fun lists. You are going to get a different answer to your question based on anyone you ask, personally I stick with one of everything and it has not left me feeling lacking.

ALSO if you have some friends who can split the cost of the game each person pick a side and go in on core sets. It brings the cost way down if your only doing 1 faction.

Tonight I was going to run this list because after playing for sometime I feel like returning to the T-65 is going to be the way to roll.

Blue Squadron Novice — T-70 X-Wing 24
R2 Astromech 1
Primed Thrusters 1
Vectored Thrusters 2
Ship Total: 28
Blue Squadron Novice — T-70 X-Wing 24
R2 Astromech 1
Primed Thrusters 1
Vectored Thrusters 2
Ship Total: 28
Tarn Mison — X-Wing 23
Plasma Torpedoes 3
M9-G8 3
Vectored Thrusters 2
Ship Total: 31
Bandit Squadron Pilot — Z-95 Headhunter 12
XX-23 S-Thread Tracers 1
Ship Total: 13

If you have a group look up Heroes of the Aturi Cluster, it is such an amazing way to play X-wing. For every person playing you will need one rebel ship and 2 tie fighters. You will want to pick up a couple more of the imps ships but you can sub with tie fighters.

Last bit of spam for you this site http://xws-bench.github.io/bench/ lets you play X-wing. The AI is not the best but you can test things out. It allows for 2 people at once. Try out ships and whatever you like go buy those. A ton of people play on Vassel which is free (though a little overwhelming) or within Tabletop Sim (much more straight forward and more nice looking but costs money) on steam.

I did not know about this! This is fantastic. Your advice about purchasing/building is fantastic.

Thanks for the warm welcome!
