Elrad's Cave (Beware this cave is full of craziness and nonsense)

By Elrad, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Heloooooow Everyone,

And welcome at my second home. Yes, make yourselves comfortable, just help yourselves with beers and snacks, the fridge is not locked (yet). Cerberus doesn't bite and our VIP tonight is Ardus Ix'Erebus who'll tell us his multiple centuries of battles. Popcorn will be available for 2$ at the entrance before the speech begins. Then we'll have a debate with Lord Hawthorne who'll try to convince us to try out his strategies on the battlefield.

Finally we'll enjoy a resurrection show with Ankaur Maro (no but, what is this for a name ? Is this some joke ? I mean, it looks like the name of a no name farmer...tsss) who'll bring back to life someone we all want to see alive today.... I said : .................................................what ? You want the name of the future resurrected ? Oh don't spoil all the show please, we'll keep it secret till the event occurs ^^ .

All right, and more seriously, I'll use this thread for all my questions. Why ? Just to focus myself and not spread out all the questions I ask and answers I get. I'll ask dummy questions so be easy at me and don't throw the dwarves at me. I'll then add your answers to my question in this initial post so I won't have to break my head skimming through hundredth pages :P.

So let's begin with something that I don't clearly understand :

About the upgrade cards

Q1 : you attach them to a unit as long as the formation does allow you to add them, right ? (ex : a 4 trays reanimates unit can be attached a musician and/or a standard-bearer upgrade card)

Q2 : The upgrade cards are then attached to the unit (by paying the army points cost ; ex : Shield Wall costs 5 Army points) and they are playable during the whole game as long as the unit in question is alive (that's an evidence but let's be sure), still right ?

Q3 : So (maybe did I ask it earlier), what are the command minis used for ? I mean, yes you need them to be able to play some cards, there's no secret, both the latest news have told it us clearly ("Mistland Saboteur" or "Executioner" can't be attached to a unit that doesn't have the champion's mini). So, there it is ? The command units themselves have no strengths on their own ? They need some "class card" to become useful in a way or another on the battlefield ? (I'm not criticizing, or just a little, I just try to clear my mind)

The minis are not put into a unit unless the corresponding upgrade card is attached. Each of these champions, as you called them, have two corresponding upgrade cards that can be attached to an infantry unit if the infantry unit has the correct upgrade slot available. Once you attach that upgrade, then you replace a figure in the front rank of the unit with the selected champion figure.

Since the expansion is labeled as a Infantry Upgrade expansion, I'm fairly positive that these figures cannot be fielded individually. They are not heroes.

Some upgrades (champion, musician, wizard, banner) have two forms:

  • a non-figure upgrade (Dispatch Runner, Heraldric Surcoats) which has an persistent effect as long as the unit has at least one of any figure in a tray remaining (yes, even if it is a rune golem from FLRG upgrade).
  • a figure upgrade (Citadel Weapons Master, Eagle Banner Bearer) which replaces one of the normal unit figures with a unique figure from the Command expansion packs, and has a persistent effect as long as that unique figure is alive. The unique figure has a special number of defense and wounds from the rest of the unit

Lastly, some upgrades always seem to come in the figure upgrade forms (hero, siege)

  • the hero upgrades replace an individual figure with the hero figure, with unique defense and hand adds a specific bonus to the unit while that figure is alive
  • the siege upgrades replace a tray of figures with a tray of the siege figure, and adds a specific bonus to the unit while that figure is alive

@rowdyoctopus The command upgrade figures can't be fielded on their own as they have no dial, and would not be a legal unit without a larger unit.

Also make sure you look at Ardus' special power, he allows units in his army to field upgrades as if they were one formation size larger.

So just like I said?

Thanks to all for your answers :)

I'm not done yet with you guys :P

On the above command tool, I'm talking about the modifier disk.

1) The white symbol is a "skill action" symbol, right

2) I can combine it with any colored action symbol on the action disk.

3) So if this white symbol is a skill action symbol, I can make this combination (I don't say it is a good combination, it is just for the explanation purpose) :

Blue move Action 3 with initiative 7 AND White skill action symbol. with this equipped : rwm08_card_wind-rune.png

That does give me : archer unit cross a distance of 3 max and then can perform the skill action mentioned on its Wind Rune upgrade card.

Is it correct ?

4) does the "Wind rune' upgrade card exhausted or does it stay in "ready" position ?

Thank you !

it does not exhaust, the cards will only exhaust if they say exhaust this card or the like.

I don't think the Blue part of the Dial comes into your thinking.

It looks like it's telling you to [go left/right/back] at speed 6 or 7, then make a rotation [spin].

You would perform your action, here it would be move 3, then the modifier hits with a skill which can trigger the card saying shift than twirl. At least that is what I have read seems to say

The upgrade cards that require a figure have a red icon in the top right, such as on the Blighted Vellixum Bearer Card, or on the Front Line Rune Golem card.

thanks for your answers so my sequence was right except the exhausting thing. :)

Keep in mind that in this case, the additional movement from Wind Rune is as a second and third action. So you complete the first movement, then perform the second Shift action, then the Reform action. If any of these actions can't be accomplished, you must skip that action.

Interesting thought: if you have the upgrade like the Aggressive Cornicen, you could theoretically use this combo to Move, Attack from Charging, then Shift out of combat (suffering panic) and Reform, all in the same turn. Bumpercar Spearmen!

That is such an awesome idea - it has quite literally made my day!

It's a neat idea. Unfortunately, Wind Rune does not allow your Shift action to be used to disengage, but it's possible other combos may let us do this in the future.

You could shift to disengage the archers, followed by the Wind Rune to move to the side and reform setting up a nice flanking shooting position. I'm sure the upgrade will find a lot of uses with the Archers as it even allows the unit to perform a ranged attack and then reposition after.

Yeaaaah my boxwes arrive today afternoon. They made it before Easter...

@Elrad

Where have you been? The game's been out a month and it looks like you got it after all. But no posts in a while? What's up?

I hope so. He also mentioned something about coming up on the end of term in grad school.

Eesh. I know how that goes. So many late nights finishing up that dissertation. All in all, it was a good experience, and well worth it, but I can still say that I am so glad that's over.

doctoral thesis stuff I believe... @Elrad and @Muz333 have been MIA lately...

I'm in an 11 week training course down in York far away from home at present!

Hello Everybody,

I told this forum several months ago that if I was on the hype train for this game I would eventually progressively disappear from the scene. And there I am again.

first of all, I would warmly thank all of you for your kind messages asking about me. It's very nice to know that out there there are people remembering you even after you left for a hile. Thanks to all of you, I love you (yes, I do!)

So, what's new about my "nonsenseness" ? I just had an interview for a scholarship at University. It took me so much time to write the 8 pages paper and prepare the ten minutes presentations (...****,so much hours drawn fro just ten *** minutes that will decide whether or not I'll get that **** scholarship). About the scholarship itself, I'll know more about next week (by Wednesday maybe).

About Runewars : all minis are glued and primed. I painted a full unit of skeliz archers but they need some more details to be showable... but if you insist I may post a picture of them :P.

Did I play the game already ? Oh my god yes, I did... ... two games so far.... and the Latari are soon out and the skeleton cavalry is so interesting.

About the Latari, I love their mounted units, the mounts are just beautiful (Yeah... I like cats, tigers and other relatives ^^). But for now I'll just try to have a few more games with all the rules and then i'll decide whether or not I'll keep going with the Waiqar's or the Daqans. Meanwhile, a friend at university had me give a try to Star Wars Destiny and it's a fun (not so) quick game. But Runewars is still in my heart. I'll post again on this topic when I'll have played more. I thought I would be more into painting, but I realize that I'm not that patient... Oh well, this is a game after all, and I'll take my time.

I still remember that I had talked with some of you about meeting one day IRL and have a game... I don't forget it and when the time allows it I hope w'll finally meet and party all night long while our minis die and resurrect for our sole happiness..... man and they still say that the others are the terrorists.... I hope they won't find my cave here or I'll be good to have a head to head conversation with Donald T. About him... it makes me always feel like a little strange when they say on TV : "Donald'swife..." I mean... I'm a huge fan of Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge and so on so...when they say "Donald's wife Melania", I'm always like "Oops, isn't it supposed to be Daisy ? She will be jealous...oups, wrong Donald, sorry".

Ok guys i'll stop here my trip and i'm happy to be back among you.

Thanks again to all of you for your fidelity :)

@Elrad Good to hear you are doing well, if not a bit stressed for your preparations at university. Good Luck and hopefully you return to play with us in the forums again soon!

Good luck Elrad, good to hear from you!
