Right now, the best we have is using the high defense figure upgrades. The problem is that these guys hang out in the front trays. There is one possible solution: since you only have to deal damage to the back rank just take a few from each tray but the example(s) seem to imply that you go from one full back rank tray to another only if there's no figures left.
I went over the damage, wounds, hits, and others to try and find anything that specifically mentioned this and found nothing. I'm certain we'll get a 'fix' that changes this.
