Boba crew and Ghost/Phantom interaction

By Sunitsa, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I'm familiar with the FAQ about Boba discarding the Ghost title: it explains that without that title, the Phantom will only deploy once the ship carrying him is destroyed.

But it doesn't say anything about what happens to the Phantom title. The Phantom title explicitly refers to the Ghost as the ship that can use the special arc to attack and that can perform an extra turret attack at the end of the combat.

Is a VCX without the Ghost title (because Boba discarded it) still a Ghost? If so, why?

Phantom text (enphasis mine): While you are docked, the Ghost can perform primary weapon attacks from its special firing arc and, at the end of the Combat phase, it may perform an additional attack with an equipped "Turret". If it performs this attack, it cannot attack again this round.

Am I right to think that if I discard the Ghost title with Boba I would end up also "turning off" the Phantom title because it doesn't have a legitimate target anymore? Or there is something in the rules of titles that says that a ship got its name in the squadbuilding process and thus the Ghost stays as the Ghost even after Boba discard it?

This is in the FAQ. If the title is discarded, you lose the end of round firing, and the ability to deploy the shuttle prior to death.

This is not.

FAQ only refers to the deploy aspect of losing the Ghost title (since that's what the Ghost title does, it allows to carry the Phantom and deploy it), but they don't say anything about what happens to the Phantom title once the VCX loses the Ghost title.

That's why I made the topic.

The FAQ doesn't actually say anything about end-of-round firing. This still needs addressed. (Edit: No it doesn't, there's a Frankmail just downthread. Ignore the rest of my ramblings and go read it.)

On the one hand you have a couple of well-established precedents: 1) things you can equip during Squad Building generally don't stop working because something invalidates them during the game, and 2) don't overthink it. On the other hand, it straight-up says "the Ghost may..." and I don't know how to interpret that as anything other than "the ship with the Ghost title".

We could really use either a firm yes or no on this. A no could be as simple as "it's not the Ghost any more, so the Phantom title doesn't do anything to it." A yes could take the form of either an errata for the Phantom title or a general rule that says "A ship equipped with a unique title can still be referred to by that name even if the title is discarded."

There's a Frankmail!

I misremembered I guess *shrug*. I thought it was in there.

My read is that it's not the Ghost any more - the Ghost is the ship with the Ghost title - so it doesn't work.

It would be nice to get this in the FAQ, though until that point there is an email ruling from the FFG Email Ruling Collection

In response to your rules question:

Rules Question:
X-Wing Rules Question: Boba Fett Crew and Ghost/Phantom titles. If a Boba Fett Crew card effect is used to remove the Ghost title from a ship with a docked Phantom, and that ship has an equipped turret that would allow an end-of-combat turret attack, is the second attack still allowed once the Ghost title is removed?
Since the Ghost title is removed, the Phantom’s ability does not apply since it is no longer equipped to the ship with the Ghost title.

Oh, sweet, I missed that! Thanks.

So no rear arc primaries either. Right?

Right. It gets none of the benefits of having a docked Phantom.

Well, looks like we just found the solution to beating Kanan/Biggs.
