How many upgrades?

By Attackmack, in Runewars Miniatures Game

If Im not mistaken this game will feature "unit upgrades" similar to X-wing and Armada? How many upgrades can a unit be given?

I ask because one of the biggest issues I have with both X-wing and Armada, two games I otherwise love for the most part, is the amount of upgrades being slapped onto each and every unit. I like how upgrades and adding keep making the games interesting and opens for much variety but I really hope we will typically see a single upgrade or perhaps two per unit and no more?

1-4, depending on unit size

It all depends on the size of the unit. The unit cards show how many and what type of upgrades for each formation. Usually one upgrade for two tray units and around 5 for max size.

Alrite. A bit more then I think I would prefer but then again I don't know anything about these upgrades. So what do these typically do, are they very situational and easy to forget about during a game? Are they portrayed by special models (like standard-bearer and/or captain/sergeant)?

I was going to stay away from this game since my money-stamina is wearing out on all the games I enjoy collecting but this just look so **** fun I know Ill have to pick up at least the core box on release.

Upgrades do a variety of things. Check the upgrade links on this page for a sampling of what different upgrades do: http://runewars.wikia.com/wiki/Daqan_Infantry_Unit_Upgrade_Expansion

Some upgrade cards are tied to special models, while some are more similar to X-Wing upgrades. There are some situational upgrades and there are some that seem like they'll always be good. Some require you to exhaust the upgrade, while others are always active. Some appear to be better for beginners but may be less useful to experienced players.

Keep in mind too that only the largest units will have that many upgrades. As the size of the unit increases, their upgrade options will increase as well. So a unit with 9 trays, that costs about 25% of your total point allotment, may be able to take 4 or 5 upgrades, but your units of 2 or 4 trays will likely only have access to one or two upgrade slots.

There are some upgrades that are unique, just like XWing. Each upgrade will tell you other restrictions, like only a specific faction, or unit type, or only a specific named character.

Ok. Sounds interesting, I love the upgrades that is represented by a special model since it changes not just the stats but also the appearance on the table. Helps remember things and looks nice!

It also means those upgrades can be destroyed by slaying the special model.

Truth. If I could target the Dual Turbo Laser (upgrade) in an X-Wing game, that would turn the meta on it's ear! I'll be trying to get multiple upgrade boxes because I think the figs look cool, and will make my army stand out, and will help remind me what upgrades I have, and I'll enjoy painting them, and... I'm sure you get the idea.

Yeah this is great! Show how the "accuracy" or is it "precision" symbol on the attack dice can be very useful in certain situations since its one way of targeting specific models unless I misunderstood things?

I love Armada, its one of the few games that really makes it feel like you are controlling huge lumbering warships that slowly manoeuvres around each other while blasting away with everything not tied down! But the heavy presence and focus on fighter squadrons and the sheer amount of upgrades on each ships did turn me away from the game and now its mostly a beautiful showpiece on my shelf.

Im hoping Runewars can get more table time for me as the amount of games I collect but don't play has become...extensive :D

Accuracy on the dice precision is the modifier on specific cards creating the effect of an extra rank for the option to reroll

Yup, accuracy allows you to target specific figures where as precision is a different keyword altogether.
