In Round 2, Leo only took 2 actions.

Playing the Guard Dog can be done as a Reaction if done first.

It didn't cost you anything, but particularly if you pick up Charisma, that "better-than-free action" to spam friends and meat shields is something to remember and over-use.

I've never played Leo or Ursula so it's all a learning experience.

A few notes:

  • It's been confirmed that, as far as Ms Devine is concerned, zero is a number. She should have spawned guarding Constance or Sebastiane, letting you potentially interview Ishimaru and gain an extra clue. Furthermore, with Diane in the right place, you could have place the clue from Fine Dining on Ishimaru, letting you pick it back up easily and saving yourself an action. That would have left you with an odd number of clues, so you'd have been able to play Mysteries Remain to get another experience point.
  • Speaking of resigning, why resign so early? I might be misunderstanding your board state (an occasional update on your damage/horror would help), and I'm hardly blaming you for ignoring Jordan (maybe if he'd been adjacent to the Foyer, you could have gone for him, but you were unlucky with that setup), but with Ashleigh dead, you were in a secure enough location to gear up and potentially kill another VIP. Even Cover Up wouldn't be so bad, since you could use Mysteries Remain to get an extra clue in play and clear it. Again, though, I might be misinterpreting, and you could have been in worse shape than I thought, and 4 XP is nothing to scoff at.
  • Roland's gun doesn't discard itself when it runs out of ammo. Thus, you would have discarded it to Corrosion instead, and Corrosion would not have surged (not that it would have mattered, since you resigned immediately anyway).
  • Could we have a bit of context for your campaign decisions? Are you aiming for a particular path, or trying to set up the chaos bag, or just roleplaying?

I assumed that there had to be clues in play for her to move to their location.

After the last few times I've ran this campaign I've become a little gun-shy concerning the fact that

you can lose the campaign on scenario 4

. Especially when playing solo with Roland (and his somewhat low Sanity) I tend to err on the side of caution. I'd got three interviewed folks and killed a potential enemy so I decided to get while the getting's good. I'm going to give putting a update on the board state into these write-ups.

I mostly go for what the character or characters would do before wondering about what would effect the campaign. I'm going to restart the Path To Carcossa campaign with a new line-up and go more character driven, as far as the campaign goes (since Roland solo is a bit of a square). I'm going to take advantage of the fact that the investigators in Path To Carcosa don't necessarily start together to try an approach I've never tried before.

> The Investigators cleared a path to the Eztli ruins.

> Alejandro chose to remain at camp.

> XP Earned: 3.

During Interlude I, I discovered the following:

> I crossed a Provisions each from Leo and Ursula.

> I made Leo the group's lookout, each investigator gained 2 extra XP.

With 5 XP each to spend, Leo paid 4 total XP to gain the permanents Adaptable and Charisma, then used Adaptable to replace both copies of Contraband with Calling In Favours whilst Ursula paid 5 XP to replace both copies of The Chthonian Stone with Ancient Stone [1], gain the permanent Shrewd Analysis (which I really should have taken at the start of the campaign) and replace both copies of Knife with Spirit Athame [1].

*sigh* I was so looking forward to your solo Jenny FA report for the Tomb Raider analog because I've always wanted to try that and yet never have the time to play a solo campaign. I was going to live vicariously. QQ

I admit I was tempted to go solo Jenny for FA (and will probably do a solo run with her at a point) but, after building the two decks for a different campaign I realized they were massively thematic for Forgotten Age).

A few rather painful notes:

  • Arrows from the Trees cannot "do nothing." When it says that "each other investigator at an Ancient location must also resolve this effect," it means that you have to resolve it regardless of your own location. That's an extra six damage to Leo.
  • Ichtaca is Alert, not Aloof. She engages as normal, and attacks normally during the Enemy phase. Two more damage to whichever investigator would have engaged her.
  • Voice of the Jungle can only be staved off by exploring , not investigating . That's one horror to Ursula, though that's relatively minor.
  • Scouting with binoculars gives 2 experience to the scout only, not the other investigator.

I'm fairly certain you would have won regardless, but it would have been a lot tighter. The big difference is that Ursula should have only earned 3 XP, which might have influenced your decision to bug out so early (but, then again, Leo would have been in much worse shape, so it probably evens out).

>Alejandro is continuing his research on his own.

>I added a tablet to the chaos bag.

With insufficient XP to spend on anything my investigators were left with trauma and a angry Ichtaka before I proceed to the next scenario.

Return To The Night of The Zealot Scenario I: Return To The Gathering (Jenny Barnes on Standard Difficulty)

I evaded the Relentless Dark Young (base 3 vs diff 2, drawing the Tablet so I failed and took 1 damage and 1 horror), evaded the Relentless Dark One (base 3 vs diff 2, drawing -1 and succeeding, disengaging and exhausting it) and used 2 actions to discard Hypochondria.

III: Enemy Phase

the Relentless Dark One engaged and attacked me, doing 2 damage and a horror.

IV: Upkeep Phase

I drew Bandolier and gained 2 resources.

ROUND THREE

I: Mythos Phase

Agenda 1a gained a final doom (advancing the agenda and discarding cards before spawning a Ravenous Ghoul at the Main Path with 1 doom on it) before I drew Grasping Hands (base 3 vs diff 3, drawing a Tentacle and taking 3 more damage, leaving me with 2 remaining damage).

II: Investigation Phase

With the situation looking grim I pondered my options (which were limited to say the least) before evading the Restless Dark Young (base 3 vs diff 2, drawing 0 and disengaging and exhausting the RDY), moved to the Main Path (engaging the Ravenous Ghoul), evaded the Ravenous Ghoul (paying 2 to Streetwise for base 6 vs diff 3, drawing Elder Nameless Thing for -5 and failing) and fought the Ravenous Ghoul (base 3 vs diff 3, drawing 0 and doing 1 damage).

III: Enemy Phase

The Relentless Dark Young moved to the Main Path before it and the Ravenous Ghoul caused enough damage to defeat me and force me to lose the camapaign.

The Relentless Dark Young shouldn't have done any damage to you. You had it evaded both rounds.

From a tactical standpoint, you really shouldn't voluntarily attempt a test with a difficulty higher than your skill value unless you're using Survivor fail-to-win cards. You usually want to be +2 or more over the difficulty before pulling; wasting your actions trying to investigate that Shroud 4 location was a mistake. You should have been digging through your deck to get Lockpicks out or playing Emergency Cache and pouring the resources into Streetwise.

  • Evading the Hunting Horror (drawing -3, failing so the Hunting Horror attacked, doing 1 horror and 1 damage and defeating me).

At this point with 2 permanent mental trauma three scenarios into the campaign I decided to call it a day for the campaign.

A couple of thoughts:

  • You really don't want to get caught engaged with an enemy that you can't deal with. Diana has a bit of an edge in that she can Dark Insight an early enemy back into the deck, but getting yourself armed should still be priority one. In particular, you really shouldn't have triggered the Archives. Pulling them so early is a bit of a bad break, yes, but you should have just stayed put and drawn cards until you were certain you could take on the Hunting Horror.
  • Punching the Hunting Horror is not very effective. If you really need the Hail Mary, evasion is better. The odds of success are the same, but a successful evasion will actually let you get away and gear up to fight back properly, while a successful punch won't do much of anything.
