Heavy cruisers

By chr335, in Star Wars: Armada

Okay so we don't have anything offical as a heavy cruiser but I consider the victory and the assualt frigate Mk2 to qualify for now.

Which do you prefer and what is your favorite load out.

Me personally haven't used the AF2 yet but my favorite victory is the Vic 1 with APTS and xi7.

AF2 - Acabar, Enhanced Armament, and Gunnery Team

In the distant past, my idea of a heavy cruiser was a VSD-II with Gunnery teams and XI7s, escorting a battleship ISD-II with a similar loadout. That these heavy cruiser are outperformed by strike cruiser Gladiators pretty much killed the reason for me to take them, sadly.

Yet. Never too early to start pushing for them :)

So apart from speed, what would the Vindicator have that the Victory wouldn't? And I don't think Vindicators are canon anymore, since the Interdictor is no longer the Immobilizer-from-Vindicator hull like it was in Legends.

Personally the Vindicator feels a bit bland. It's like the low-poly model used to stand-in for Star Destroyers at a distance where you won't miss the details. So what could it give you other than being a faster VSD?

Reintroducing Broadside-class crusiers into the universe and Armada could be interesting. How can you get missiles to go off at long range, which was what the Marauder corvette and Broadside were designed to do?

Something called the Immobilizer-418 is still referenced in the new canon - prototype in Tarkin , surviving example in Heir to the Jedi after production of the Immobilizer model has been discontinued, and the Empire has moved on, to creating Star Destroyer-sized Interdictor cruisers (the ships seen in Rebels).

We already got the broadside in the Gladiator star destroyers in old 2 legends GSDs and Broadsides had similar hulls kinda like vindicators and the old Immobilizers.

New dice and rules and a token. In star wars empire at war these ships could attack at a much longer range than other ships. Dice for ultra long range. Upgrade card and token that allows you to attack an area around the token placed on the play area within distance 1 of the token. The attack is determined normally but the damage is dealt at the end of the squadron phase or something like that to represent the time it takes for the missiles to travel.

I say we get the Broadside cruiser and Marauder cruiser in the same pack. It can come with the new dice, tokens and rules. I think this would help cut back on mass squadron fleets.

As for the topic at hand. I don't run VSDs or AFIIs much but when I do I prefer VSD with enhanced armament and high capacity ion turbines or rapid reload, depending on class 1 or 2.

You can't take both EA and HCIT/RR together.

Also we already have a few ways to do longer range black dice.

My favorite VSD build is/will be:

Vic 1 - Sensor Teams / External Racks / Quad Turbolaser Cannons / Warlord title (MJ list) 99pts.

My favorite AF build is:

MK2A - Intel officer / Ordnance Experts/ ECM / Spinal Armament / Paragon (Sato list) 113pts.

I expect the new red anti-squadron die to have something of a chilling effect, myself.

Ohhh. Wait. I reread the rules you can only have one modification. I was thinking that was only per slot. Thank you for the correction.
