So here is How I magnetized all my runewars minis.

Materials;

Now I have a question : how long does it last ? I mean the magnetizing effect does last for long or do you have to replace some magnets from time to time ?

Very little. Neodymium magnets are the strongest and most permanent magnets known to man. If they are not overheated or physically damaged, neodymium magnets will lose less than 1% of their strength over 10 years - not enough for you to notice unless you have very sensitive measuring equipment. They won't even lose their strength if they are held in repelling or attracting positions with other magnets over long periods of time.

Steel discs link is broken to me on the mobile phone. Maybe is just me.

I like the steel discs solution. I have to find something similar and cheap in Spain.

yes the milliput is to fill in the gap and get more adhesion on the magnets, in the past I have just glued magnets to the underside of bases for WHFB movement trays however the glue doesn't last very long and the last thing I want is magnets to break of when I hit a speed bump. with this method I have filled a tray with 72 30mm base minis, half were metal and half were plastic and short them as hard as I could, nothing moved or even shifted. So this is my new obsession...the trays stack wonderfully, Ikea makes a shelf that the trays are the same length as. I'm glad I found the article and I'm happy with my methods of doing this!

i like how you did this, seems far cheaper and simpler than what i was going to do. although i still plan on gluing in the siege pieces.

That is probably fine since you don't lose any significant space with them. Looks like that link only works on computers...

Now that you show the bottom of the miniatures to us. Do you think this kind of magnets could work? In this way maybe I don't need to modify so much the bases.

I've been thinking this sort of a setup would lend itself to organizing the minis in storage really easily too. I've seen some WHF players that did this to hold the minis on a metal movement tray. I was thinking to just put some thin steel sheets with foam in between them. Cut out squares in each layer of foam, magnets hold the mini upright on the sheet steel, put another layer of sheet steel on top for the next layer, then more foam for the next group.

What is the measurement of the slot in the tray? What size did you use for the metal disc? The link doesn't work.

If you can find a thinner magnet those would be ok or if you don't mind them being raised up from the tray.

24.48mm base size on the archer I measured the metal discs are 19mm

I was just wondering. I saw a good deal on 1/16 x 3/32 cylinders and I was wondering if you had tested that size out. I'm not sure on the length of the peg so that's the real question since I'm not at home at the moment.

Just find th is thread via google, because iam looking to magnetize my Runewars minis also :)!

I think the easiest solution would be neodym magnets which would fit in thickness and diameter, into the holes of the miniatures, so you don't have to work with milliput or something similar. Just glue the magnets into the holes directly, but i don't have the exact measurments for that.

Instead of using steel discs, what about magnetic colour, or adding "iron additive" to a colour of your choice, which you could paint into the base holes, within the trays? Wouldn't that be much easier? The steel discs are also raising the miniature up a bit, because of their thickness.

Any thoughts about this method :)? ...

There are several other methods people have used, if you browse the painting/modelling subforum.

To confirm that I keep the same polarity on all my models I use a D68PC-RB . The Red/Black coating makes picking up the magnets and inserting them with the correct polarity very easy. You can also just paint a single magnet and keep it at the end of a stack. Ues the stack to align each magnet as you use them.

I just take one of my already magnetized models and stick the magnets I'm going to use to it, that way the stack is always facing the right direction.

EDIT: Because mangetized either isn't a word, or means something totally different.

The way I've always done it is work from a bunch of magnets stuck together, instead of removing each magnet as I apply. When I take a break, I mark the next magnet to be used with a magic marker so I always know what end is up.

I jumped the gun on getting the magnets before the game came out, but I like the milliput/1/16" magnet, 1/10 might work better and I may order those next time and see if they fit fine, I know 1/8" (which I'm going to use on my cav and heavier models do need to have the little hole drilled wider definitely worth it for those models. The steel discs are extremely thin that there is little to no visible rise, especially after basing the minis...
