Is a 2nd core useful if you plan to buy expansions?

By Elkerlyc, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Currently I lean to give the game a go to scratch my WHFB (RIP) itch.

Assuming there will be discounted core-sets in the (near) future; is there a point?

(especially if you plan to collect only one of the two initial armies because I'll wait and see what else will be available eventually...)

Bang for buck it is useful, not to mention the second copy of the rules, dice and movement templates. That said you'll still want to dip your toes into the expansion waters for some of those upgrade cards and alternate sculpts for the siege units.

If you are only collecting one army then I'd say split two boxes with a friend so you both have near enough a whole 200 point army each.

If money is no object, then the only reasons I can think of to buy two core sets are 1) to get extra copies of dices, cards, books, and templates and 2) to have an even larger collection giving you more flexibility. The component extras are especially helpful if you're playing an opponent who doesn't have a collection of his or her own. The larger collection will give you more flexibility in the near term, but as new armies and expansions are released, you may find this larger collection to be redundant.

It's a struggle we're all facing and I go back and forth on the question myself. If you decide one way or the other, let us know how you decide and why.

Yes the second core will give you several trays worth of models to fill out units. So if you are running large blocks cores are the most economical way to fill out those large blocks...

2 core-sets but splitting one after deciding which army suits me better is actually a good idea.

It leaves you enough for a demo game (lure more ppl to addiction)

Painting-wise the undead seem a lot quicker/easier.

But the humans seem more flexible play-style. (which I like if this is the case)

*le sigh.* Choices...

Any insights in making this decision?

After Several games. I am in love with the undead. But they are definitely more difficult to play well. You need to combo a lot of banes together. They tend to strike slower. As soon as you add upgrades the undead grow in power exponentially. The humans on the other hand are point and shoot and hit very hard. Kari is a beast with her surge ability to the point of being close to broken in a 100 point game. Humans are like a army of chaos chosen and undead feel like vampire wood elves.

Well, that hooked one of my friends into the game.

Well in the mean time you really just want two cores to enjoy the game fully. I've played 2 games since getting my first core yesterday and it's fun but you can tell it will be much more so with actual options during army building.

For myself, I will only be using one core. That is already 50% of an army build. I want expansions with some cool card options. If I get two core starter sets, then the expansion figures are hardly needed. Of course, I play humans who have more point-heavy troops. Regardless, there are so many amazing figs probably coming out for this game I would only pick up two starters if money is absolutely no worry for you and you do not care about upgrade cards that much.
