Terrain & Close-In Question

By Carnage4u, in Runewars Miniatures Game

I have some images I will hope explain my question

I have a unit 2 trays wide 1 rank. The unit occupies Terrain

They are attacked by a unit 3 tray wide.

The unit with 3 tray loses 1 tray when my Unit attacks. I want to close-in

I am not sure if I am allowed to overlap, or which method I can use..

another issue I don't understand which may invalidate these options is - Close-in says you move a shift1, but when you leave terrain with a shift, your front or side of base should be touching the terrain

Then the unit outside the forest loses 1 rank

Which of the 3 would be correct?

These are all 1 range slide from edge of terrain

Option #1

Option #2. Similar to 1, but it includes a slide under normal contact rules.

Option #3 Can I slide at an angle, and then slide into the flank?

when you exit the terrain you have to place your trays outside the terrain but touching it. so im guessing your middle picture would be correct. but then the entire shift to close in is supose to encompass you leaving the terrain so im not sure.

I think all 3 are incorrect, actually. You cannot exit terrain and end touching another unit. Nothing about the close in rules seems to invalidate that rule.

Thematically, I think it makes sense that a unit wouldn't be able to spill out of terrain to stay engaged as quickly as a unit in the open field would.

But since the Attacker gets to assign the wounds, you would only break up combat f it was advantageous to you, right?

except that when you close in you have to touch the other unit. if you attempt to close in and you cant touch the other unit then you dont close in. so the most likely ruling would then be you cannot close in when coming out of terrain

I agree, you said it better than me though!

But what about scenarios where you could move 1 inch and close in coming from terrain?

81.8 specifies that as long as one of the trays of the unit is touching the terrain, that edge of the unit is considered in contact with the occupying unit.

81.8.ii says that you treat the edge of the terrain as if you had collided with the occupying unit. So when you 'square up' and move into contact, you do so with the terrain, not the trays.

You never are allowed to 'overlap' terrain, the same way you never overlap any other obstacle, like enemy unit trays.

I dont think that can happen. So when you close in, you do so by performing a speed 1 shift. When you are in terrain and perform a shift, you don't actually move 1 inch. You place your front or side edge touching the terrain. You don't place your tray outside the terrain, and then do the shift.
