Terrain Size Comparison

By Elliphino, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Thanks @power500500 for providing the following terrain dimensions!

Spikes/rocky outcrops 2.5x2.5

Swamp/Crumbling wall 5.75x6.5

Forest/Stone Terrace 8.5x6.5

For comparison to other common fantasy terrain:

Battlefield in a Box Rocky Outcrops range from 4"x2.5"; 3"x3"; 3"x2.5"; 3"x2.5"; 3"x2"; 2.5"x2.25" Full disclosure... I think I have an older box of these so measurements may not be exact. But they are pretty approximate to the spikes/outcrops in any case

Battlefield in a Box Swamps 10" x 7"

Citadel Wood 10" x 7.5"

And no longer available as far as I know, but standing in for me for the Stone Terrace will be the base of the Dreadstone Blight/Witchfate Tor 9.5" x 7.5"

Also no longer available, but I may also use to stand in for the stone terrace, the Citadel Gaming Hill top section is 10"x5". The base is 15.5" x 10.5". I'll only count the top as elevated since that's the closest equivalent of the stone terrace.

I feel weird because I normally theme all of my gaming terrain, but with the trays as the main component, I will actually probably stick with 2D terrain for ease of play and placement

What I plan to do, if using the 2D terrain, is use the tokens and put 3D stuff on top. Ideally it wouldn't be bigger than the token. Then when it matters, just pop the terrain off and utilize the token. Perhaps this is something that will be too cumbersome in practice, but I'm looking forward to trying!

That's a fantastic idea

For XWing, I built 3D floating asteroids by using the original terrain template, sizing it to plastic and cutting that out. Then I mounted a dowel rod to it, and sized some rocks connected with piano wire to simulate the asteroid cluster. When they were done, we could place the terrain templates on the playing field, then just put the 3D model over it so that it was easier to see and added to the atmosphere of the game. Whenever someone would get close or need to pass through, we could remove the 3D model and just use the template as the original rules. I plan to do something similar, building my own custom terrain pieces on top of particle board templates. I will leave space on the terrain to place the number of trays allowed to occupy it, and if we need to check something specific we can easily remove the terrain sculpt, leaving the original template in place.

This was my biggest wondering: how would the models interact with terrain on those wobbly trays? But it appears that all terrain in Runewars behaves like buildings do in Warhanmer: to occupy them, you pick up the unit and place it in.

That initial Beasts of War demo video from GenCon shows something different happening where they are trying to basically slide the unit into terrain, but that's not how the rules read.

Given this, and the statement in the rules that you can substitute terrain, I plan on using the 3D stuff.

Still, even if you don't want to use the hills/buildings, the other pieces of terrain should work fine in their 3D versions. Bases for woods and that Battlefirld in a box swamp are barely thicker than the card stock. And for outcrops and spikes it's irrelevant because you can't enter that terrain anyway.

Definitely give the terrain rules a close read before you abandon your thematic terrain ways.

this is the beauty of the terrain system. you never move over the terrain. you hit it then either have to stop never entering it or you can "enter" it, in which case you pick up the unit and place it in the terrain. so you can easilly design your terrain around that. the rocky outcropping have a capacity of 0 so you never have to worry about anything being placed on them. the forest has a capacity of 6 so you just have to design your terrain to be able to hold 6 trays, and place tree features on the outer sides.

Or with trees, actually all terrain, I like being modular and just being able to remove the trees or other elements altogether

that is a good option too but it isnt required for runewars.
