Moving my X-Wing Collection to new house

By Phoenix5454, in X-Wing

As the title states I'm moving into a new house. I begin moving this weekend with the intention of being full moved in the weekend on April 8th.

Anyways one of the first things I'm moving is my X-Wing miniatures collection. I'm not moving far literally 5min down the road in the same town. I don't have any fancy foam cases etc. And I don't have the money or time to get them right now anyways. I'm thinking that if I place all the small ships in boxes still on the stand they will be ok (as if they are on a shelf) in the back seat of my truck for the short drive. The large ships I'm thinking I should take off the bases etc. So none of the pegs or peg holders break. I don't want to bubble wrap them all etc. because the move location is down the road and they will be moved by themselves nothing heavy near or on them. I'm just reaching out to the community so see if anyone has experienced issues in moving a large X-wing collection. For reference I have at least one of each ship minus epic ships. Any constructive advice is much appreciated.

Took off the bases and pegs. Cotton is cheap. Ships are lightweight (small and large). Simply use generous amounts of cotton and they will be ok. Plus newspapers. Think about Christmas stuff.

Raider is very tricky to handle. Cr 90 too. I can not say any advice about those. But to transport Small and Large ships cotton and newspaper is enought.

I only have a gozanti for epic ships so I'm OK there. Do you mean cotton cloth or cotton balls?

Balls. And be geneous. No free space into the box. Put your ships into "extasis field"

Just be careful extracting them from the cotton, that point weapons and things don't snag and snap.

That's a great simple idea that I failed to think of. Thank you.

I move my Raider around in a toolbox wrapped with bubble wrap. Very cheap, no cotton fiber, no damage. A lot of my large ships are also in the bottom drawer of my toolbox (YV-666, Shadowcaster, Decimator), one sheet of bubble wrap on the bottom, one on top (again, no damage). Miniatures are pretty lightweight, so there is a limited amount of harm that they can come to unless you throw the container around. So my advice:

- Carboard box, one layer of bubble wrap on the bottom, put small and large ships, bubble wrap on top. They'll be fine.

- For your gozanti, wrap it, put it in a seperate box. Add some clothes if there's too much space so it won't slide around.

- Move those boxes yourself so you know they will be handled carefully.

EDIT: oh, and I advise against putting them on pegs / bases. I have seen other players move them this way, but this puts more stress on the ship's peg and a few got damaged.

For small ships use a wad of poster putty under the bases when you box them. Plastic bag the big and huge ships to contain any breakage and use the cotton mentioned above. You should be in good shape.

You're just driving yourself 5 minutes down the street? I think you're way overthinking this. As long as you're not just tossing them loosely in a box they should be fine. It'd be another thing if you were having to box them up in a moving truck or something but if they can just sit on your backseat I really don't think you need to go to any of the extremes discussed here.

I was just going to move the small ships into boxes standing up as if they were on the shelf and place them on the backseat in my truck. The only precaution I was going to take was taking large ships off their pegs. I may throw some cottonballs in as suggested just for piece of mind but either way I appreciate all the feedback.

Take off the pegs, allways. Use bubbles or cotton or simply newspapers...but do not forget to get them off.

I appreciate your advice! Do you really think it's a bad idea to leave the small ships on the pegs and stands? I only hesitate because I have a lot of small ships... Keep in mind I'm only moving 5min down the road. They will be in my truck in their own boxes ( by factions of course) on the backseat not in a moving truck or with other boxes. I'm so ridiculous that the X-wing miniatures are getting there own trip to the new house lol but hey I spent a lot of $$$ on these lol

Get a 10-15buck tacklebox from walmart. It holds vast majority of small ships in the slots. Only my large ships are "properly" stored using SirWillie's boxes.

I guess I'm being lazy... I should take them all off the pegs not just the large ships. I wish I kept the original trays from the packaging lol

I'd also like to say thank you to everyone. I never been part of a hobbie community that's so helpful. I've played paintball, I shoot for recreation, I've been on mustang forums when I was building my 97 cobra (since sold), I used to play star Wars ccg and magic the gathering, blizzard entertainment games etc. and out of all the forums associated with those hobbies/games the X-wing miniatures forum community surpasses them all. So once again thank you.

Styrofoam peanuts? Cotton will probably get caught up with protruding guns I think.

Good point...

Foam peanuts might be better to avoid that. Dang.

The guy who had damaged his pegs by transporting his ships vertically (aka, ships ready to be played), had weighed bases and had made himself a custom mold so the bases would not move. This was basically akin to assembling a ship, holding it by its base in your hand and then moving around sharply. I'm not sure if you tried to move a large base ship that way, but mine tend to topple. That's why I tend to pick heavier ships by the model. At any rate, the paint on these things is actually pretty hard to scratch and my small based ships are in basic plastic containers in my toolbox, some of them stacked on top of the other.

Now that I think about it, here's an ever cheaper solution: open a box, put a heavy sweater down, put small and large based ships down, put another sweater on top. I'll probably work better than the bubble wrap :P

It's a short drive and these things aren't Faberge eggs.

Get a shallow box or a lid from Something . Lay a T shirt down and set all the ships on the shirt.

Unless you plan on pulling some sort of 'Dukes of Hazard's car chase and jump over some train tracks. They will be just fine.

People drive around for hours with the ships tossed in a tackle box.

Genius! I took your suggestion and instead of sweaters I used T-Shirts. Worked brilliantly! Put all the stands in a separate box and it's all good. Unfortunately there's 6 boxes of just ships and stands lol and that doesn't include my token cases etc. But the ships will be protected for the short ride tomorrow and not slide around. Thanks again for the suggestion!
