Newbie's casual list - on a budget

By groggydog, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi friends!

I just got the game and I'm looking to build a decent list for casual play (to help me practice and learn, mostly) based on the TFA Core Set and then one more set - most likely the HotR package. So I have two questions:

1) Can you think of a better way to build this list given those two sets?

Rey (45)
Wired (1)
Hotshot Co-pilot (4)
Finn (5)
Millennium Falcon (TFA) (1)

Poe Dameron (31)
Trick Shot (0)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
BB-8 (2)
Weapons Guidance (2)
Integrated Astromech (0)
Black One (1)

Total: 96

2) Do you think there would be a better set to buy besides HotR to build a decent beginning list?

Thanks so much for your time and advice!

You may want Pattern Analyzer so you can tallon and get your focus, or else Primed Thrusters so you can barrel roll with bb8 even if you are stressed.

Thanks for the feedback!

If you have the points you might as well use the PS9 version of Poe that comes in the HotR box.

I suggest you proxy upgrade cards. It will give you more build options with your limited ships. You really can't go wrong w/ HotR. It's a good expansion if you want to fly rebels. This is how I would build out a Rey/Poe list:

Rey — YT-1300 45
Expertise 4
Kanan Jarrus 3
Finn 5
Inertial Dampeners 1
Smuggling Compartment 0
Millennium Falcon (TFA) 1
Ship Total: 59
Poe Dameron (PS9) — T-70 X-Wing 33
Lone Wolf 2
R2-D2 4
Pattern Analyzer 2
Integrated Astromech 0
Ship Total: 41

Definitely you should proxy upgrades in casual games. It'll give you a good feel for how things work so that you can know what you should buy next. Plus printing out a list from an online squadron builder is way easier than fiddling around with all those blasted teensy cards.

Thanks for the feedback, and same to @Helias de Nappo - what's the usual etiquette on proxying at FLGS casual nights and/or tournaments?

One more question - what's the best way to fly this list? It seems like I should sort of treat Rey a bit tankier and fly Poe fairly close to her while strafing/flanking as necessary. Is that more or less right?

Making proxy lists is fine as long as you ask, but if you want to learn to fly you might not want to be weighed down by all the different combos & abilities that they offer.

Regarding your original list, I'd do Primed Thrusters and Snap Shot in place of Trick Shot on Poe.

I would "slow roll" to begin with. Once you're in range, S-Loop with Rey to get out of the enemy's arc. Try not to land on rocks!

For Poe, you can fly him conservatively or aggressively--it really depends on your style. Just remember to Always Be Focusing. Unless you are definitely out of arc and can guarantee a Torpedo shot.

Good luck!
