Is this game already Imba?

By Gibbilo, in Star Wars: Destiny

Still thinking about getting in this game. But its so expensive....and ofc the supply issues.... Even so, I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on some starters (assuming I can find them when they re-release), but I've been reading around here and reddit and it seems like there are already some huge discrepancies in terms of hero cost/value among the factions.

I don't see myself playing tournaments, but I'm afraid to end up in a situation where I have a limited card pool due to the expense and where whenever I were to play with a friend I would just get destroyed if I happen to only be able to field a hero heavy deck or something like that. So, is this game already skewed/broken towards imbalance? Should I stay away?

The short answer is no.

The long answer is noooooooooo.

But really the long answer is not really, but Villain decks are easier to play, and the Villains probably have more options. You need to work harder to win as a Hero player, but it's not so badly imbalanced that you'll get wrecked consistently just for playing a certain faction.

Yea it is, don´t buy in and let me have more cards. No, it´s fr*kkin awesome.

This is a ccg, all the sunshine and rose colored glasses won't change the fact that there will be broken combos, there will be optimal card combinations, there will be power creep. It is fact. Very few games outside chess are perfectly balanced and this ain't one of them. Power will fluctuate between factions, upgrades, fotm but if your friends have similiar cards or mentalities you'll be good. You will get wrecked by tournament decks playing casually, don't care what anyone says. If they didn't win more than lose they wouldn't be tournament decks.

Open your eyes, watch the videos.

Starters are 15 and boosters are 3 so if that's above your price range then this isn't the place for you. This bleeds trolling and so you must forgive my reaction to it but think for yourself and get on board if you like what you see... otherwise this subject been beaten to death many times over.

Many Chess players would argue that it's not perfectly balanced.

I'm not really good enough to properly weigh in on the subject, but many people will say white has a slight advantage.

So, yeah, even that supposedly most balanced of games has people saying one team is OP.

Red is clearly the superior color; it makes things go fasta.

I definitely do not think it is imbalanced, but I'm also rather frustrated by the lack of supply. I'm just getting into the game, and all I want to do is crack open some packs and put together some decks/experiment. But sadly it looks like I'm going to be stuck borrowing decks from friends for the next 2-3 months until product is available again.

I'm sure I'll poke around a bit on TTS just to try things out, but it's just not the same!

It kind of depends on what you consider imbalanced. There's definitely a range of tiers among cards, characters, and decks.

One thing that's worth considering is that building stronger decks tends to be harder (i.e. more expensive) in Destiny because all dice live in the rare slots. Most decks will run anywhere from 15-25 dice, including characters. That means upwards of half your deck MUST be rares, and can make it very hard to build decent decks from a limited card pool. If you're looking to just buy a starter and a handful of boosters, it's going to be hard. You're pretty much going to have to do some aggressive trading (and hope you pull something that you can trade with) or go to the singles market to fill out what you need.

This should start improving soon as the newer starters and boosters for Destiny start to be seen in shops.

I did jump in some days ago. I bought one of each starter sets and gave it a try. Now I preordered a box of the second wave. I have played a couple games before deciding and my plan is not on looking for the perfect combination of cards to smash my opponent in his teeth, I wanna play casual and with thematic decks. If it is only to find the perfect broken combo to win dozens of tournaments, I'd advice not to delve into any ccg, it's pure killing... I've played Magic (a bit), Android Netrunner (a lot) and some other stuffs once in a while, but here the dice system is genius to me, I haven't played Dicemasters or any dice game at all, but to me this is just a very good game even with the content of the two starters. I never defeated Kylo Ren, in the rey starter, Finn is pretty weakened by the absence of his second dice... (IS there no mean to find it in a booster ? Do I have or to buy another rey set or to buy it at a reseller?)

All in all till now, I'm satisfied and quite hyped. I'll see what the boosters of second wave bring (no, I won't spoil myself with all the uncovered cards :D ). Then when Awakening comes again, I'll buy one box of boosters too so I can benefit of some of the good cards the first wave provides.

Buy the two starters/play them at a store or with a friend who has them and make you a clear idea of the game then decide if you'll delve into this game or not. I have already chosen the dark side

How much is a box of boosters? You seem to be playing this casually, which is what I want to do. But you also seem to be paying upwards of several hundred $$ in order to play something casual (maybe not true?) which is what I want to avoid.

It would be nice to have some good games be able to have some options to build at least a few different decks (even if they aren't optimal) without have to spend multiple hundreds? (true or nor true?)

I laughed so much for this comment (and still laughing even it is the 3rd time I enter this thread and read it)

You're so right but this is because I like investing in games I really love. Let's take a simple example. When I began playing Netrunner, I was wondering if it was a game for me. After having exhausted the core set for a while I knew that it was a game for me.

Now Let's get back to Destiny. 90€ for a 36 boosters box, this is a small fortune, I agree. But this second wave is focusing on Rogue one for one part so since i liked the movie (far more than Episode VII), there is a thematic attraction for me.

I invested rarely in expansive games except when I love them. I did some blind buying of course but no one that revealed to be a toss and a waste of money.

I invest so much money at a time to be able to play some combinations but I'm not an hardcore gamer who will chase the very last card and dice that misses to his collection. I'll stay with what the boxes bring me but won't chase after a single card sold 10$ on the internet.

Now I understand that this kind of business plan is made to make you pay for "one more booster pack" and this is the sad rule of this kind of games.

I suggest you to give it a try with just the two base sets. They are poor in card number, but I played like 7 times to here and there are still cards that I haven't used because they don't fit to my strategies or they fall uselessly in my hand ( ah, dirty useless cards, how dare you to come in my hand right now ? I'll kick your butt and then I'll lecture you about the divine punishment and how to administrate it in a proper way for you dummies !! :D ). So yeah playing with just a few bunch of cards and trying to get the most from them is rewarding and helps you to integrate the rules and small subtleties that can be found with 20 cards.

I know the risk in buying a box of boosters is to become totally sunk in the middle of cards but I take the risk. Let's see ^^

I've been playing every week for 5 months, I do very well at tournaments and I own the whole collection (which took a lot of gas).

The game is not imbalanced if you have access to all the cards.

if you have access to very few cards it will feel very imbalanced.

if you have access to a fair number of cards it will play quite well.

The most important thing to do for balance is to play players of similar skill level or exposure to the game.

Players who have lots of experience can put up serious fights with non optimal decks and new players with borrowed decks will not get the same damage output as an experienced player. When I lose at tournaments it is to players who are experienced and know what to mulligan, when to reroll, and which characters to take out first. Last week I was beaten by a "poor mans Luke/Ackbar" that didn't use Luke but used Rey/trooper/ackbar. It wasn't lucky rolls either, they mulliganed well, put out the right upgrades and held on to key cards till they turned the tide of the game.

All that said the minimum price tag for this game is $150. You'll need both started and a box of boosters and a few bucks to buy that one last cheap character you need a second dice for. Trading helps. The biggest obstacle is that you can't really play any yellow decks until you've gotten a good spread of characters and you need two copies of many of those characters. In one booster box of 36 you'll average 35% character pulls which means you'll get about 12 characters to add to your Finn Rey Kylo trooper from the starter. There are 24 characters in the game 18 of which you need two dice to optimize. So at one box and two boosters you will have variety but need to trade or snipe singles in order to get the characters you need and those couple of uncommons that are just so so useful that they can't be ignored.

Last thought, there was a four trooper deck that made the top 8 in the huge TTS tournament, and is not an expensive deck (it also wasn't optimized and didn't need the two epics it did have if I remember the interview correctly). So a strong player and a thoughtful deck can go far. Don't get frustrated with early defeats, ask lots of questions and you'll have some fun break throughs.

Also this game is just plain fun.

Very detailed. Thank you for the information and stats to help me make an educated decision
