Creating the Perfect Storm >> The Design & Development Process for The Gathering Storm

One of the exciting things about The Gathering Storm campaign is the fact that it’s the first adventure product available for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay . As such, I’m anticipating that it will be the first exposure to WFRP for a lot of people, and for many others, the next step into the Old World for PCs who completed the Eye for an Eye adventure included in the core set.

With this in mind, the expectations and excitement from fans and players are sure to be extremely high. I knew we had a daunting task on our hands – to develop and deliver a top notch adventure that provides a varied and intriguing look at the Warhammer Fantasy setting and life in the Empire, as well as showcases WFRP’s mechanics and unique gameplay.

So I know its sort of when its ready, but that article makes it seem as if it is ready. So uh, when does this thing ship? While I need time for my monetary wounds to heal after buying Runewars, I really do want this. Now like. :)

It's at the printers, so yeah - it's done. But it's a 6 week process at the printers, followed by several weeks of shipping and delivery.

80 pages? barely 80? that hardly substitute a campaign. its just a medium length modul. Or at the best the start of an campaign. And maybe it is just the start of an epic campaign, where the Gathering Storm is just the first part of several connected parts.

I will certainly hope that.

I still look forward for the product however.

The Restless Dead for V1 was a campaign that was less than 80 pages and my players still remember it fondly. I got the impression from the teaser document that there a three elements to the story - so if that means three linked adventures (The size of Eye For An Eye may be? About 20-25 pages each?) then I'll be happy with that as it'll last my group a good few sessions.

One of the issues we've had with previous incarnations of WFRP, was that campaigns were so epic in scope that for a group that can't meet regularly, there's whole swathes of material you never get to use. I bought V2 when it came out and we've played intermittently since then, we only finished PotD last summer (we've had a fair few short adventures, fan made and published, in there as well).

I think it's easy to weave shorter campaigns into an epic narrative, but less easy to take elements from an epic story without diluting the quality.

I'm looking forward to this. A lot.

I really dig how the upcoming products expand the core game. New conditions, insanities, actions, locations, etc. It's like getting a new rulebook every time :)

I'm not sure how I feel about that. I mean, I definitely like the addition of new conditions, insanities, etc, but it feels attached to a rather extraneous core product. If a GM wants those new cards, but doesn't like pre-made adventures, they're stuck buying an adventure for a few extra cards.

It's not a big deal for me, because I'm stoked about the adventure and will be getting it, along with all the cards. Still, I almost wonder if everyone would be better served if all those cards were put into a release devoted solely to cards, or at least more focused upon them.

I see your point, but really it's no different than in prior incarnations when a new career, new spell, new ritual, etc. was released inside of a secondary sourcebook. Case in point (for me) was the Night's Dark Master supplement - I didn't care one wit about vampires in my game, but I did have a need to have extended necromancy spells and wanted some of the other fluff in there.

The one (BIG!) advantage to this new format is that instead of having these additional careers, abilities, skills, in separate books which have to be independently consulted, you can now build a complete randomized table with the cards. Of course, that doesn't mollify you if the other content in the release isn't interesting to you.

What happened? It was listed as on the boat earlier this week and now it's back to at the printer !
