Double Vibroblades: A Nostalgic Attempt

By Darcune, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hullo Again

I'm a huge fan of the old KOTOR Games, and I always took my character from double-vibroblades to double-bladed lightsabers. The absence of double vibroblades in the FFG Star Wars Ruleset made me decide to attempt a Homebrewed version. Please pitch in opinions as to its balance.

Quote

Double Vibroblade

Encumbrance: 5

Hard Points: 4

Rarity: 7

Damage Mod: +2

Range: Engaged

Critical: 2 Adv.

Skill: Melee

Qualities: Defensive 2, Pierce 2, Vicious 1

Description
A relic of a bygone era, the Double Vibroblade is hardly ever used, save by those melee masters who prefer it's peculiar style. Two blades adjoined by a twisted handle, this weapon is a deadly force in the hands someone trained in its use, and incredibly dangerous to an untrained user. When using a Double Vibroblade, the user must act as if they intend to use the second blade, increasing the difficulty of the Melee Skill Check per the rules of Two-Weapon Combat in SWEOE p. 210

Unique Mods for this Weapon:
Perfectly Balanced Hilt

A modified version of the Balanced Hilt Attachment from p. 188 of the EoE Core Rulebook. Only one or the other may be applied

Rarity: 5

Price: 1,750

Hard Points Required: 2

Base Modifications:

  • 1 Quality (Accurate 1) Mod
  • Reduce Adv. required to hit with second blade by 1

Optional Modifications:

  • 1 Decrease Encumbrance by 1 Mod
  • 1 Quality (Accurate 1) Mod
  • 1 Quality (Defensive Mod)

The reason for the forced use of the Two-Weapon Combat rule is to simulate the increase in difficulty for the user to properly use this weapon without resorting to the use of the Unwieldy Quality.

Thoughts?

Regarding the weapon: I think this is too complicated, and too messy. Why not just take the electrostaff from Force and Destiny (page 173 CRB) and use it as a template? Unwieldy and Linked are nice simple, and it's in line with how double-ended weapons are already designed in this system.

Regarding the attachment: I think it's slightly overpowered for its cost and hardpoints required. And just personally, I don't like the Defensive mod for a double weapon. Double weapons in Star Wars lore are anything but defensive. They are frenetic, difficult to control, but designed to confuse and/or overwhelm an opponent.

I agree with this. Both the electrostaff and double bladed lightsaber are Linked 1, Unwieldy 3.

I would change the weapon to drop the defensive 2, add linked 1, Unwieldy 3. Also reduce HP to 3. That is the current maximum for melee weapons. Reduce Encumbrance to 4.

I would not use the attachment at all. Instead, use a balanced hilt and superior.

The way you have them written, there is no melee fighter who would ever not use a Double Vibroblade rather than a Vibrosword. It has more hardpoints and defensive, and 1 less encumbrance compared to dual Vibroswords? No question there. Especially when stacking with the Perfectly Balanced Hilt, which is a Balanced hilt combined with superior, with the additional defense mod? Saves 1 HP, reduces cost by 4,750 cr? And only needs to be purchased for 1 weapon instead of 2?

Based on the electro-staff and double sabres.

Add unwieldy 3, linked 1 and increase the encumbrance 2 and double the cost.
