Vader

I'm a new player, and having a great time with Skirmish. I've done decently at a local tournament, and learned a lot at a regional. I've played competitive lists made up of Jabba's Realm stuff, but for nostalgia sake I want to use the iconic characters.

I was working with Boba for a bit, but using him over the erangers just doesn't make sense, and saves a point.

I was brought up to speed that all of the early wave characters are pretty much unplayable in competitive, until erratas come, like IG's.

However, despite that I'm trying to build something around Vader. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, I didn't play it the way I would at a tournament, and opened a door early. But it didn't feel like a good enough list.

Any help out there?

If I were fully committed to Vader, I would either run things that can add to his defense (elite Royal Guards) or things that will make him go more than once per turn (2 elite Officers). I'd commit to one or the other and add as many Dewbacks for short-ranged 3-die attacks.

Vader is pretty overcosted for what he does. 4 movement and no reach makes it very difficult to use his brutality. Although putting an eOfficer in there will help, I'd still say there are better options for that 23 points. (Terro + Inquisitor + another set of eJets for example, or put blaise in there for spy cards). I agree with cnemmick that if you are committed to him, either the royal gaurds or 2xeOfficers is the standard way to go.

Hopefully they fix Vader soon.

Thanks for the suggestions. I like him because of his cards, Brutality without reach is definitely tough. I think for tournaments I'm going to be forced to abandon him in favor of my normal tournament deck. In the meantime, I'll try him with some guards and possibly add the extra officer to see how it works.

since there are uniques with cost half or less than vader, that can do great damage and with better command cards.... poor vader doesn't see table. I can't imagine how they'll fix our favourite sith lord, but need a great fix.

Due to his cost, he won't see tournament play until they beef him up a bit again, which is probably coming.

However, I've found great success by loading up on things to alleviate his biggest problem: Movement.

If you can load up on Movement Command cards and take an eOfficer and a couple of regulars, (or Weiss), you can potentially find a way to put Vader in the heart of their army at the end of Round One WITH the ability to Brutality. Vader still hits really hard, probably still the highest consistent regular attack in the game (until BT-1 and IG's upgrade). If you can get Brutality off, gain Initiative, and then do it again, ... chances are that you can put a huge dent in the opposing force, leaving them with not enough figures to effectively focus the Dark Lord down.

But... that's a lot of IF coming off of that plan.

Ultimately, there are just too many figures right now and too many command cards that allow the now regular 3 (or 4) die attacks to ignore defense and blast Vader to bits.
