How are the trays in final products ?

By Elrad, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Hey guys,

Hope everything goes well for everyone.

So, I'm asking one small question that those among you who already got the game will be able to answer : How are trays working for you ? Do they move and fit smoothly or is it a Tantalus punishment ? It was nearly time for me to ask the question after having preordered three core sets...

Thanks for your answers.

EDIT : I hope this question has not yet been asked somewhere else because I'm a bit lazy these days and with the explosion of posts here, I don't feel like skimming everything new :P

I haven't played with mine yet. In the demos at Adepticon, some trays would stick together, making removing them difficult.

for the most part they seem to come apart fine, a couple stick. keep in mind i havent used them in play yet will let you know this weekend,.

The biggest issue is that positioning is everything, and even a little resistance while removing a tray can lead to disrupting the entire unit. If you are careful, it shouldn't be a problem at the end of the day. You just have to hold down the rest of the unit and remove the tray carefully.

if its too big an issue during play i will file the connectors a little bit

You can use squares to mark the corner of the unit before to try to remove the tray.

They are easy to move. We played last night on 2 xwing mats and found them just fine to move and remove from damage.

The ones at Adepticon fit tightly because the basing / painting wasn't sanded off of the sides and caused the fit to be a little closer than designed.

Ah, that's great to hear. I was thinking I might need to file down the locking parts a bit.

Played last night on my unpainted trays from my Adepticon core set. Again had problems removing trays. You pretty much have to pull them straight up, which might seem obvious but is easier said than done.

The trays can be a bit tricky, but you can just remove the whole unit from combat to remove a tray, and accurately square them up again since the opponent hasn't moved. When we played a quick game with the core set at Adepticon, we used the corner piece for deployment zones to mark a tray when we had to take someone out from archer fire.

I was thinking about drilling a hole at two of the opposite corners of the trays, anchoring some piano wire there, and then adding some tree stumps or tall boulders or lantern posts or something to my basing to use as lifting points to pull the trays out. Essentially something that will stick up to the height of adjacent figures and aid in lifting the tray. I haven't gotten my hands on a game copy yet to try it out myself though. I've always been worried about the trays sticking since the Gencon video.

That would look AWESOME, definitely post pictures if you do it. Honestly, I don't think removing the trays is going to be that big of a deal, I haven't had any issues with it personally. But you should still do that for aesthetic reasons.

I've got a bunch of green stuff on the way, I'm going to model some standing stones covered in Terrinoth runes to use with my Daqan trays while I wait for figures to paint. For my Waiqar I already have a bunch of dead trees and stumps I'm going to use to go with my icy marsh theme.

some of the trays stick and others are really smooth. i think they may loosen up as you play more. ive noticed some of the single troops would stick a bit and after the first game they are sticking far less.

If not going smooth after using it maybe sanding a little bit the trays could be an option.

Now again it's fifty-fifty. Or you're lucky enough to have a full range of easy-going trays or you struggle with the vilain cousin of them... Bah FFG has used us to this, no ? As long as it doesn't kill the whole game... I I get a mix of good modeled trays and hard ones, i'll take the good one, compare with the others and apply any needed modification. Let's wait and see. My core sets should be at home by April the 17th-18th So I have time to prepare my collection of sharp japanese knives :D

Does it help at all to wash them with soap and water? Is there any bend to the trays when they come out of the box? Would soaking them in warm water for a few seconds and laying them flat on a table help them flatten out and fit better? I'm just wondering if its the same problem we get with minis where they are a bit bent sometimes from the cooling process after they take them out of the molds and you have to heat them to bend swords back and straighten out parts. How about mold lines, where do they fall on the trays? Do they work better when the mold lines have been trimmed?

the trays are not the same plastic as the miniatures and there was no bend that i could notice when i took them out of the box. they seem flat at all times.

Yeah, the trays are definitely flat enough. I've only had issue when they are attached on two edges. I think with time, they will move more easily, but they can get a bit stuck as of now. Didn't create any real issue in my games last night though.

Let's be honest...by the time you buy a few expansions and your second core you'll have enough trays that you can sort the ones you feel are better fits. This is going to be like X-Wing bases....you'll have a hundred of the damned things ;)

@Elrad The trays are tight but easy to separate, not nearly as finicky as they were in the gencon video!

thanks to all for your answers :)

Just a quick question: what is the diameter of basic-figs bases(footmen, reanimates, archers)? Is it the same as WH40k space marines?

24.48mm so probably 25mm lol

I've found the trays are mostly good, but sometimes a couple of them just won't let go of each other and that's a huge pain.
