PC Superstitions

By HistoryGuy, in Game Masters

My group now has a ritual that when there is a critical roll they have to do well on, they instantly grab a red solo cup to make the roll. And it seems to do the trick more often than not. Do any of your PCs have a strage ritual or superstition they follow to make the session go better or at least more exciting?

Those Solos always were lucky, and never let anyone tell them the odds.

We have a player who you never allow to touch your dice, as he seems to curse them...he also suffers from the same dice bad luck, but is apparently contagious!

I make ever effort to keep him away from GM dice.

I don't know if its superstition or not but i generally will no longer use dice if i accidentally leave them in my truck for an extended period of time. With Alabama being 900 degrees during most of the year i think the dice tend to warp in the heat and start skewing results pretty badly. With them all skewed randomly though the results are probably just as random as before, but i just stop trusting them and buy a new set

One of my players gave his character what he calls 'success cologne '. Just before something important needs to be done the player will declare that his character has put on his cologne.

He roleplays his character's belief that this helps well enough that I've started giving him a boost die to one roll that he wants to use his cologne for.

My dice luck sucks in both FFG SW and FRPG's .. I chuck a dice set and buy new ones.... they don't work, my dice luck still sucks.. diceshoponline has made THOUSANDS of pounds from my sucky dice luck ...

I've had ALL the dice in an EDGE game come up blank.. yeah my dice luck sucks... The other guys get me to play for 1) comedy relief... and 2) coz they never roll as bad as I do :D

Once you have the Wheaton Curse, you'll always have the Wheaton Curse. It does not go away.. ever.

It depends on the group.

One I played in had a superstition that the players should never feed the GM. Every player that did (for almost 2 years) had a character death in that session. Through random rolls, not GM fiat.

I had a player who couldn't stand how his dice were rolling, so he decided to make an example of one. Took all his dice onto the porch, put them all in a circle, and put the worst rolling one in the center. Then destroyed the one in the center with a hammer.

A lot of people "charge" their dice by making sure the face they want to roll is up. Or sometimes down depending on the person.

In Edge, my group has a superstition that the more one sided the destiny pool is, the more skewed to the other side the rolls will be. If it comes up all white, they rush to flip a couple.

EotE screws with my superstition. In 15+ years of tabletop gaming, I've always used one color scheme for dice (black with white pips/numbers). If I get free dice of another color I give them away.

All these colors in my rolls still make me itch.

My group has two that immediately spring to mind.

1) Never leave a Challenge die sitting on the table with the Despair symbol facing up. That is just asking for trouble.

2) There is one seat at our table that--for whatever reason--causes the sitter to always roll abysmally. We can't explain it, but a person sitting at that seat always screws up the most crucial rolls. And it's not the chair! We switch out chairs every week (all folding chairs that we pack up), and still this seat at the table is cursed. The table's fairly small, so we can't just not use the spot. But it's gotten to the point that if one of my players is gone, the seat to the GM's right will remain vacant and everyone will load up the other side of the table.

One guy I play with rolls his dice in sets...all the purples then reds then green then yellows and boost somewhere in between...it actually kind of annoys me as it takes him twice as long to roll any given roll.

I don't have any superstitions . . .

Nope. I might have had at some point in the past, but I've never bought into any of the superstition belief sets.

I've known a player roll all his 'good dice' (green, blue, yellow) in one go, then any 'bad dice' (red, black, purple) one by one.

Its quite funny as he gets angrier and angrier as he gets more threat and failure.

My wife has taken to scooping up her dice and dropping them one at a time. Everyone at the table has expressed how bothersome we find that to be, but she is convinced it is helping her rolls.
