@ Graver: I think it was supposed to be both, the fact that the war with the Warp Entities then the Enslavers just broke the last straw for them being able to do anything, I admit my Necron lore is pretty shaky due to well there not being much out there.

@DrgnScorpion: Fair play, but if you omise not to take it personally (and you must!) I think you're lingering amidst a massive, ongoing misconception amongst the readership (and possibly the desginers/authors, but given I feel my conclusion comes from their stuff; I'd suspect it's still the readership who're 'at fault'). Which is to say: fired bullets are anathema to humans. The warp is anathema to humans. The warp is anathema to almost everything except psykers. And nulls/paraiahs/whatever-we're-calling-the-people-who-actively-repel-the-warp are anathema to the warp.

That is to say: that the warp is 'anathema' to the C'tan is that it is perhaps the one thing which is truly...beyond them. Their souls mightn't be exotic enough to really assert will within the warp as per a psyker. So with that in mind the warp is their vulnerability because it's a tool they don't have. But saying it's 'antimatter' to their 'matter' is, I think, somewhat misreading it.

Vaul's Talismen work because they work against pretty much absolutely everything (except Lord Admiral Cornelius Ravensburg and His Divine Imperial Majesty's Battlefleet Gothic, hurrah!). Big enough to kill a star? Probably big enough to kill a c'tan.

Looking at the C'tan and Necrons actually adeptness with null-fields and stuff, I don't think the popular 'warp is a magic bullet versus c'tan' is quite the right way of examining things. They seem to have built (or had a hand in) the Cadian Pylons, the Sepulchres of the Tombships, the null-field intended for Medusa V and a few other (anti)warptastic devices.

Also, taking the 'character' (shan't say who) in Deus Ex Mechanicus at face value, it's not that the Eldar (or the warp) or the Enslavers drove the C'tan into hibernation because they were a threat to the C'tan; but that the C'tan hibernated because the plague was killing everything else. (And crikey, do I want to reread DEM just now, terrific short story!)

@Xisor: I completely forgot about DEM (love that short story as well), hmmm, I think i'll have to reread the necron fluff in the stories as that is where they really shine.
