Looking for advice on painting to real world airforces

By catachanninja, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Title pretty much says it. I wanna paint up some ships in airforce grey and maybe some russian inspired camo. I was wondering if anyone had any recommeneded paints they use to get that grey right or suggestions on how to do the russian camo. Also, because i am far too lazy to research the russian military, if they have an offical camo pattern that somone could point me at id love ya for it.

Not a bad starting point.

Do a search for cross reference material on various paint lines. some of these references also have the Federal Standard number for the paint used.

Testors makes the Russian Air Force Colors in their Enamel line. Vallejo also has some of the colors. You're basically looking for any of the fine-scale plastic model paints: Tamiya, Vallejo, Testors, Humbrol, Gunze, PolyScale, etc.

I wouldn't use enamel colors on such small models without an airbrush.

Why not? I've been using enamels for over 40 years with very good results, and I don't use an airbrush. Enamels are naturally thinner than acrylics and can generally be used straight from the pot.

I've had good results with Tamiya plastics line of spraypaint for a base. Light Gunmetal, Aluminum, all the "silver ish" colors work pretty good and can do a fair number of models. I let dry a couple days, then go over them with regular colors for details. I always finish up with a semi-gloss clear coat to bring out the metal look with a sheen, but not high gloss laquer because its just too much luster.
