Double rancors!

By ryanjamal, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

I’ve been playing around with lists at my local tournaments recently (I’ve been recruiting players and letting them borrow my lists, so I’ve been making my own lists out of the leftovers), and I’ve come to really enjoy the double rancor list I’ve been using. I don’t think it’s top tier, but it is definitely competitive and can wreck any list on a good day. Here’s the list:

Rancor 10

Rancor 10

Beast Tamer 1

Nexu 4

Jabba 6

Greedo 4

Weequays 5

I did have a hilarious game against a bantha list where he stormed up and blocked both of my rancors inside my deployment zone, with one trapping the other behind it so that only one of my rancors could attack. I lost that game rather horribly. But once I figured out how to play against a bantha list, I’ve done fairly well (though some of my competition is very inexperienced). Regardless, it’s a lot of fun to play. Slamming two rancors down is straight up intimidating.

Has anyone else had success or been enjoying a double rancor list? What do you guys think?

What a cool concept. I love my rancor but generally only use it for non competitive games because I don't really rate it as top tier compared to much of the new stuff for similar points invstements. Haven't run two of them simply because of the idea of having to make them fit on maps!

I think the list you have there is very generous but I can see what you're trying to do and it's great you want to intro new players. Well done!

Yeah, I started this list as a handicap for myself, but then I found it surprisingly effective. But the first time I used it I forgot that massive figures can't move through each other so my initial set up blocked both rancors in ?. Thankfully my opponent let me change up my initial placement. Since then I've gotten fairly good at making sure both rancors are in a position to be effective. It's also nice to have three figures to make use of beast tamer and the creature and brawler command cards.

It's definitely a great advertisement for Imperial Assault - people will see those from across the whole store! :D

CRAZY! Just yesterday I made a double rancor list on tabletop admiral (linked below) and I wondered if anyone had tried it yet. I figured everyone would just think I was crazy, so I didn't bother posting. What lists did you go up against other than the Banthas? Any success against Jedi Luke or Stormtrooper swarms or anything? Just curious. I prefer weird lists over meta lists ANY day.

Looks fun! If you want it to work a little better but still keep the same feel, then I'd suggest dropping a eWeequay group for Gideon (you already have Temp All) and Greedo. That gives a little extra flexibility, and it's very handy to be able to move a Rancor 2 squares with Gideon (Crush can trigger off of it too). I'd also recommend dropping Motivation for something else...maybe Devious Scheme? Maybe Salacious Crumb...attach him to one of the Rancors for some comic relief, and he can also finish off those 1-health figures that survive the Rancor's attack/cleave nastiness.

And yes, I enjoy playing lists like this. I've wanted to play double-Rancors from the start.

I played against a variety of lists, facing both Jedi Luke lists (well, the same list twice), other Merc hunter lists, and some Imperial lists (mainly dewbacks and jet troopers). I won against all of them, but again I'm playing against people (with the exception of one other player who's experienced) who just don't have a lot of experience and so don't have a strong chance of beating me. But I think it could actually be competitive even against quality competition. The problem is that with these big pieces a lot of it comes down to a little luck that goes the wrong way. If I draw take initiative and you can't negate it, that's a huge swing if you would have killed my rancor but instead I killed two of your guys (potentially three). So, it's very swingy, but a lot of fun!

I took my Double Rancor, Jabba, Vintos, and Greedo to the Ohio Regional and just missed the cut to Top 8. I then switched out Greedo for Gideon and won a local tournament with it (though it was smaller, naturally).

Love how tanky they are, and yet can dish out the pain too. Gotta be a little careful with them, though. Keep them trained 99% of the time.

EDIT: Here's the list:

2x Rancors w/Feeding Frenzy, Gideon w/Temp Alliance, Vintos, Jabba, Devious Scheme, Black Market
