New Player - What next?

By Æiric, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello all!
My wife and I recently got into X-Wing big time... no 'formal' games yet.
We're a bit stymied on what to get next, would love some advise from some more seasoned payers.

What we have so far:

  • 2 Core Sets (original series)

Tink's Imps:

  • TIE Fighter expansion
  • TIE Phantom
  • VT-49 Decimator
  • Quadjumper
  • Imperial Aces

My Rebels:

  • X-Wing expansion
  • Millennium Falcon
  • A-Wing expansion
  • B-Wing expansion
  • Rebel Aces

1) quad jumper is scum not imperial faction.

2) make sure to get the Force Awakens core set mostly for the updated damage deck.

3) imperial veterans and the Ghost expansion should be your next buys

4) then the K-wing and The Inquisitor's ship (tie advance prototype)

and a Starviper expansion pack (scum ship, but two cards "Autothrusters" are a must have in this game especially for A-wings and interceptors)

5) YT-2400 "outrider" expansion and Upsilon shuttle expansion.

Then play a little bit and decide on your favorite play style. When you want to break into the scum faction but the "Most Wanted" expansion pack.

As far as Rebels go, Heroes of the Resistance is great, and will give you Snap Shot to go with your A-Wings. It also comes with Trick Shot and enough Integrated Astromechs to pair with your X-Wings. The U-Wing also comes with some good stuff. I've had fun with Sabine's TIE.

For Imperials, I'd say the Force Awakens Core set & a TIE f/o expansion would be good (plus the fun Rebel stuff in the new core set). The TIE Striker and Special Forces TIE are fun too.

*Forgot to add the Arc-170. It's an awesome ship that comes with some great pilots. I fly one with the Ghost regularly.

Yah, as we're just playing casual at the moment we needed another ship for her fleet.

Are no Scum ships allowed in imperial lists? (still new remember! lol.. I thought Boba Fett was allowed in Imp lists)
We're using the Aurora app to create our lists.

So what I see so far is I need the Force Awakens Core huh?

The scum faction was introduced around wave 6? Idk.

Anyways the slave 1 expansion was released prior to the creation of the scum faction so it's still imperials, but in the most wanted expansion they included the scum and villainy dials, tiles and pilot cards to outfit the slave 1 as a scum ship. The pilot abilities of the scum pilots are also way better than their imperial counterparts.

okay so no scum ships allowed in Imp lists then correct?

@ Æiric a lot of people are going to recommend things that will make you competitive in the latest meta, so be advised.

If you're planning on staying casual (home games with family and friends) I would suggest choose ships that you find appealing. Like Vader? Buy the TIE Advanced. Watch SW Rebels? Get the Ghost. That kind of thing. It's hard to go wrong, as you will typically get a useful upgrade card at minimum.

If you're going to aim to play at tournament level then you're going to have to stay current with the meta in your region. What is meta? It's the "state of the game" where you play. Are most people running TIE Defenders? Then you'll either fly them too, or fly a list that can counter them.

Also, be aware of the FAQ. The info on certain cards has changed recently, and there has been clarification on other things such as timing, order of interactions between certain upgrades, etc. So download the FAQ and get to know it.

For recommendations: (I like getting individual ships in pairs, but that's between you and your wallet.)
I always suggest the TIE f/o, the TIE Advanced Prototype and the Imperial Veterans expansions for Imperial Players.

For Rebels, I would get a pair of Y-wings & the Ghost and at least one Z-95.

Good luck and MTFBWY.

That's REALLY helpful, for now we're keeping to casual games with an eye toward tournys in the future, the nearest game shop that does in-house tourneys is 45 minutes away.

Been on that, my lady is a real rules girl so she's way up on the FAQ and updated rules.

If you are playing at home and you and your wife are both cool with it, there's no reason you can't. In fact you might want to try it out to see what happens. Why not?!

But in a tourney this is a no-go right? Just making sure so if she does get into tourney playing she doesn't get used to using it.

Unless otherwise stated by the organizer, the factions are exclusive. Sometimes there are "gimmick" tourneys that have one ship from each faction, Scum & Imps vs. Scum & Rebels, etc. but for the most part, your list(s) will have to be from one faction.

I think the next step for you should probably be to just play... a lot. This is a game with so many different expansions and upgrades that it can seem overwhelming. Someone in this chat already suggested that you find a type of list that you like and fly it a lot, and I can't second that enough. The beautiful thing here is that just about any list can be fun but also competitive if you fly it a lot and learn its strengths and weaknesses.
