New Palp Aces?

By herbie93, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I haven't seen much discussion here about the changes to Palpatine and if it's affected how anyone is making their lists now.

Are you still using him?

Have you changed the way you make your lists because of the "nerf" or hasn't it really changed anything as far as list building goes?

I never used him much before and haven't at all recently because I've been using a lot of the other toys the Imperials have gotten lately so I'm just interested to hear what other people have to say.

If things really have changed that much, any advice for future builds?

I flew this after the nerf and still had a lot of success. The idea is palp is used more as a way of delivering the Crit to trigger I'll Show You the Dark Side. Otherwise just use it on those Defense rolls where you are scared

Palp's New Ride (100)

Kylo Ren (43) - Upsilon-class Shuttle
Determination (1), Collision Detector (0), Emperor Palpatine (8), Emperor Palpatine (8)

"Omega Leader" (26) - TIE/FO Fighter
Juke (2), Comm Relay (3)

Carnor Jax (31) - TIE Interceptor
Push The Limit (3), Autothrusters (2)

Nothing's really changed as far as how you'd build Palp Aces. As for flying it, you've got to be a lot more conscious that you're not going to get to react to rolls- meaning keeping Stealth Devices up is a LOT harder. It basically flies the same as before, but now you have an added element that you might waste an 8 point, 2 crew upgrade. In other words, it's the same old Palp Aces, but now with a heaping of extra RNG.

I flew this one recently and won a local tournament with it:

Carnor/AT/PTL/TC

Omega Leader/Juke/Comm Relay

Lt. Dormitz/Palp/Baffle/HyperWave Comm

Carnor is a glass cannon that really hurts your opponent. You could drop Lt D to SKBP to save a point and put Hull on Carnor instead, I like the PS3 and options for deployment more for that extra point. And you need Carnor to have some way to up his damage output.

Palp flies the same, you just can't use Palp like you did before. If you're facing down a ton of shots, call evade. If you get down to Lt Dormitz firing, use Palp for a crit unless there's a ton of TLT on the board at PS2. He still is fun, but the above list won't get you any friends...

As for his change, I'd take a former list I had of PTL Carnor, Juke Maarek, and Palp Omicron (with baffle) to any tournament now and still expect to do just as well as I did before with it. Not that I did phenominal, but just about every time I thought I needed to palp I did. You might wiff a roll here and there (unnecessarily use palp) but for the most part, life continues on for the ol' guy!

I think Palp-Defenders are still viable as the Defenders don't rely on SDs and are tough enough to take a few hits on the chin if you call Palp wrong.

Hey so, I like this idea as I'm flying a Dormitz list that's similar with Whisper and Wampa........I do like the idea though of a better 2nd candidate (e.g. Omega Leader over Wampa). I use Palp exactly as you explain. My question is do you use Dormitz's ability to throw Carnor and Omega Leader out there........I do this with Whisper Wampa and people hate it and are generally shocked when I ram Whisper in there for a shot right off the bat. I have flown Whisper with both Kylo and Agent Kallus (97 vs. 98 points). Anyway, it's always dependent on what I'm flying against and I love the list in Hangar Bay, not so much in more competitive standard tourneys. Just interested in how you fly this.

I haven't, but having the option really messes with people. Especially if they have PS4-7 ships! I screw with the rule of 11 sometimes and bank them when deploying slightly further than range 1 of the edge.

Best use is getting a TL Evade on Omega Leader turn one on whomever is not with their fleet (usually lone wolves). Works a charm :)

So, sure, I don't always put them out there, but I think I will mess with this as well. Could use Carnor and/or Omega Leader out there....thanks for the idea!

Hmm alright, interesting stuff.

I'll have to try some of these.

Thoughts on using ships with pilot abilities that sort of hedge your bets on rolls like Countdown not really needing defense rolls much. Sort of eliminate/narrow your options so you don't have all of your rolls to pick from.
