Hi MegaSilver. I'm actually working at the moment, but I've had a quick look at the picture and after a quick test it looks like something along the lines of a Rhinox Hide - XV-88 - Screaming Skull progression will get pretty close to that look.

Thanks, and sorry to bother! Didnt know if you missed my post or just hadnt had a chance to look it over.

No problem! I just might take longer to respond to questions that require a bit of colour testing :)

Hey Sorastro, you mentioned that you've switched to airbrush for priming, would you care to elaborate a bit about what one would need to get do this and how big of an investment that would mean?

Spray primers and my humble self won't get on friendly terms in this life...

Hi SirWillibald!

I bought quite a high-end airbrush in case I want to try my hand at more advanced techniques at some point (I bought this bundle: http://elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/airbrushes-and-accessories/airbrush-and-compressor-bundles/premium-airbrush-bundle), but you certainly don't have to spend anything like that for simple priming/pre-shading. I'm not an expert but I often hear that the Patriot 105 is a good workhorse, which costs around £100, although you'd also need a compressor too..

If you plan to use it for a long time to come then I think an airbrush is definitely an economical investment. :)

Thanks a lot, even though this investment will have to get comfortable on my wish list for now... :)

yeah ive wanted an airbrush for quite some time and i factored it to be around 300USD. The more i think about it though the more i dont think i'll even use it. Initial spraying like in his tutorials is about it, since the only other use i know an airbrush isnt too wide for is OSL glows (object source lighting), which he also proved you can do that with a thin wash anyway (plus most OSL i see people do with an airbrush look oversaturated and unnatural as hell).

I know airbrushes can do some really neat and clean color fading tricks, people do it all the time in 40k for Power Swords, but again very limited use for such a high investment.

I disagree. Even if you only use the airbrush for priming (you won't) it's worth it to get a silky smooth primer surface to paint on via airbrush vs a chalky surface from a rattle can.

I typically put 2 thinned layers of primer down which enables me to cover all hard to reach areas without over spraying and obscuring details.

What has happened is I end up using the airbrush to base coat larger areas of a mini as well. So much faster and smooth.

I believe the airbrush to have been a fantastic investment.

Hey Sorastro, just wanted to stop by and say thanks for producing your tutorial videos and guides. Watching some of the Descent and Runewars videos got me in the painting mood (I've previously only painted a few 40k figures...poorly), not only to start painting my Descent collection but it pushed me over the edge to pick up a box of Runewars at the weekend and get started straight away!

In the end, I followed some of your tips (Probably a bit loosely, since I am still lazy and like to skip corners where I can) and you can see my afternoon's work. I'm pretty happy with them considering I have stupidly unsteady hands.

Oh dont get me wrong i still would love to have it. Being able to smoothly apply in tight areas and better yet not having the ventilation issue with spraycans is a wonderful thought.

I just cant justify spending that much money for something i wouldnt use that much. If this game kicks off in my area and people start asking me to paint their minis i'll probably invest in one just to make my life so much simpler. Issue with mass priming with a spray can is it also leaves a ton of residue on whatever surface youre priming on, and if not given proper time to dry it causes issues.

Hey, they look quite good!! Nice job!!

If all you are doing is priming, you can go the very cheap route and head to Michael's or something similar. They do have cans of compressed air. They don't last a super long time but are functional and cheap in the sort term, not so much in the long term. Can buy a good and functional air brush for priming for around $100 and use a couple of cans to see if you really want to invest more in a compressor.

Hi SGrant89! They look terrific! I bet they'll look amazing once you've got a whole unit complete :)

(If any moderators are seeing this - would it be possible to move this thread to the painting sub-forum please? :) )

Hi @Sorastro

Just wanted to say thank you for making your guides. I have not followed them 100%, but I used them as a basis for my units and I learnt a lot of new techniques and styles. I have not gotten so far yet, but below you will see how far I have gotten so far. I will keep at it and hope to have a full army on the board soon. (The pictures does not really show off the lighting effect from the runes, which is much smoother and clear in normal light).

Hi Dancken!

They look absolutely fabulous - thanks for sharing! I'm looking forward to seeing the completed set. :)

Hi @Sorastro!

I plan to use your color scheme as inspiration since I prefer the more gritty look. What would you recommend as replacements for GW's Retributor Armour and Mephiston Red in the Vallejo line?

You can go way cheaper than this if all you're interested in is base coating/priming.

There are kits for under $100 on Amazon. If you pick and choose and hunt for one off deals instead of going the kit route you can go even cheaper. Consider how much a can of spray paint is. 10-20 cans and you've more than payed for a cheap airbrush set. In the long term it's the cheaper route since there's less paint waste and the equipment can last you a good while as long as you take care of it.

I would recommend only using these sets and brushes for base coating as they don't do anything close to detail. I have a fairly expensive airbrush set up (around $600) but I still use a cheapola wide nozzle brush for priming and base coating.

If you do go this route, the first upgrade I'd recommend is an air tank. The sets you can get on Amazon don't have a tank which means your air supply is whatever is in your hose. Not great, but if I can make do I believe you can too.

Greetings Sorastro and everyone,

To attain that lovely, rich color with the Mephiston Red, should our base coats be one thinned red layer, or a more thorough covering with two?

For example, does this gent here need a second coat on the armor and cloth, or will the wash take care of it:

I'm usually cool with trial and error but this is such an awesome model to start with. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Here's my Rune Golem with a paintjob inspired by your guide.

The glow effect turned out much more intensive in the photo than in reality, but that's what I get for using a smartphone.

Holy crap yeah that bloom effect is intense. Looks great otherwise, and of course i dig the non-traditional golem gray color for the stone.

Yeah, I don't know why it turned out this way... in reality, even though it is a bit strong (I'm no expert with an airbrush yet) it is nowhere near this. My phone really highlights the blue tones.

Hi Shrapnelsmile!

That looks pretty solid to me; I find Mephiston Red usually gives a strong finish in just one coat, although I may go over any areas that look a little thin. :)

That looks outstanding Costi!

I find phone pictures never do my minis justice so this must really be something in real life. :)

Since I haven't had time to get to basing yet (barely started painting to be honest)... how are the trays after painting the sides? I've had my trays stickin a bit, and I'm going to sand them down, but I was worried about the paint causing friction on a tight system. I planned to try a matt varnish over the whole thing to seal it and prevent some of the tackiness of paint-on-paint causing chipping but... I was really thinking that I may just avoid painting the sides of the trays?

I hear rumor that the edges just scrape the paint off so painting the sides is largely pointless.

In fact for a better fit I even sand my basing back a bit.
