Sorastro's Painting

By Sorastro, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Yeah, I want to stick to a purple/blue color scheme like we see in a lot of the fluff art, but rust didn't seem a great color combo, thats why I decided to shift to more of a weathered bronze look . I found a neat example of this (the leftmost one is more what I'm going to try for I think), and I'm going to try to shift it to my color palette.

Wow... Found this neat tutorial while I was researching , may need to rethink my rune golems look now... Here is a nice rust tutorial on how to use chipping medium too .

That marbling effect looks awesome, but would be SOOOO labour intensive!

After thinking about it, I might actually go with Praetorian Guard from Gladiator with Daqan. I just sort of like the look of that darker armor with color and purple. I've been leaning towards the old Khermi from WHFB too.

I am fairly sure that there are acrylic mediums that can be used to create the oxidised bronze effects. Though at 30mm scale they would have to be tested.

Keep in mind that a uniformly themed army looks very nice, so you want to keep it simple enough as to repeat the process you use to paint the first "undead guy with a boy" as the last. My suggestion is to make 1-2 parts POP and the rest can be plain and simple.

Keep a notebook handy and record the steps, including paint mixes and such. Use your handy, dandy phone camera too.

Any chance that we will get the paint guide for the Spearmen by Thursday @Sorastro ? Would like to see what you did with them before I start painting my own :D.

Hi Dancken! I think it would be useful if I get the quick guides ready by Thursday so I'll do my best :)

It would be really wonderful if you found the time to do that. I will for the first time ever, try to follow a painting guide, as I loved the way you painted the Rune Golem. I have bought all the colours for it and I stand ready, so it would be great to be able to start on the rest of the army aswell.

Thank you again for making such amazing videos, it is very appriciated.

Hello!

Happy Runewars day everyone! By popular demand I have created a quick PDF guide for the units that I won't be featuring in a video. You can download the PDF here. (The full article containing the link can be found here .)

Happy Painting!

Thank you the guide and for including the paint conversion chart.

You're most welcome! :)

Great PDF!

Three things

1) Thank you for showing how to get the initial color tones without an airbrush. NOBODY does that, so ive been basically eyeballing where i think i need the brighter tones with a drybrush tactic (usually works, sometimes it doesnt)

2) How did you get the paint out of the Citadel bottles? Those bottles drive me nuts getting paint out of them, i feel like i waste soooo much paint getting it out to mix/thin.

3) Never thought about literally just staining pure white for a bright shining light effect source. Epic idea, totally stealing that lol. I've been trying to switch from citadel to armypainter and this was one thing holding me back since i usually painted it in an inverted style (start dark, get brighter) and armypainter naturally thin paints wouldnt work that well for it

Thanks Sorastro!

Ive been thinking of painting the skellies a bone brown, as if they have been buried for a long time. What color(s) would i need to pull that off? I think i need to paint a basic bone color underneath and then apply a thin brown color overtop, and/or a heavy brown wash, but im not sure. But i do think i need a reddish-brown color.

Hi Vineheart01! I just use an older size 2 brush to transfer paint from the pots to the palette. :)

Sooo...have they sent you advanced copies of the Latari and Uthuk yet? ?

I think the only thing I would change would be to add some gun metal to the cuts into The Daqan shields. It would give them a more in the heat of battle look.

Nice idea!

Sorastro, I'd swear in that carrion lancer tutorial, you never switch brush sizes, including when you somehow perfectly dabbed those skeleton eyes with a big, honking brush. Is that right? Do you tend to stick to one brush?

Hi Jason! For that video I used a W&N Size 2 for some of the larger areas of base coating etc. and I think I used a size 1 W&N for some of the other bits, but mostly I used a Rosemary and Co Size 2 (Series 33) - including for the skeleton eyes. I find that having a good point is the most important thing when hitting the small details like that rather than the size of the brush. :)

Hey Sorastro, maybe you missed my previous post above or you're testing colors, but I was wondering if you found a color that matches brown bone well and perhaps the best way to make it look right on the skellies.

Hi MegaSilver. I'm actually working at the moment, but I've had a quick look at the picture and after a quick test it looks like something along the lines of a Rhinox Hide - XV-88 - Screaming Skull progression will get pretty close to that look.
