Rune Golem/Carrion Lancer bases

By Klaxas, in Runewars Miniatures Game

with these models at 1 model per tray, does anyone see a reason not to glue these directly to the tray? for that matter you could do the same with the heroes, just dont glue the single hero figure into the display base.

That's true, I see neither any reason to remove the miniature and not the tray.

I can think of two possible reasons:

* storage (though I think it is probably better to store the minis in the trays)

* you want to use the miniature in some other wargame

I advise against it for the heroes, since you can buy them as a unit upgrade, and they only replace one figure if you do that.

He mentioned just the diorama base, not the individual hero model

The only reason I could see is storage just because they can be quite large and might not fit into your storage solution standing up. Or design that solution around them standing up :)

I am interested to see how others solve this problem going forward, once the game releases I am sure we will see a lot of solutions.

well for everything else i was going to magnetize the troops into the trays. the pegs are slightly annoying. so i was going to store things standing up anyway. thanks for your thoughts everyone!

I like this idea! Have to give this some thought.

The major reason I can think of would be if you intended to base the trays. If you glue the mini down, it would make it easier to create a unified base, but you would have to base all of the trays for your alternate models too to make them match. If you wanted to you could just base one tray and then swap out the mini as needed for different configurations.

For instance, in a 200 point game you are only ever going to have 2 unique heroes, so you will never need more than 2 dioramas bases in trays. You could spend a lot of time to make those trays fancy and detailed, and then swap in whichever hero you wanted. When they eventually come out with another siege unit for both Daqan and Waiqar, if you had just based the large unit trays you could just swap in whichever unit you wanted.

For Warhammer, I never glued anything on to any kind of tray. Rather magnets work best for tray control.

I also highly recommend a big metal toolbox. You can glue neo-magnets on the bottom of the minis bases and stick them all over the floor, walls, tops, etc of the toolbox without any worry. Then carry movement trays in stack formations in smaller tackle boxes.

I did magnets for a while, just became a headache for me, personally, after a while. Buying and installing magnets, models sticking to themselves and everything else, etc

I found if you buy the smallest necessary magnet and use putty to block contact, or secures well without sticking to other magneted figures. Definitely use different sizes based on the figure and weight. It does take time, but as minis have become more dynamically posed over the years, the usual foam options don't always work or don't work as well.

I've never really used magnets. At least not successfully. How do you plan on using them with the infantry figures? Magnet in the tray and metal on the figure? Magnet the tray and figure?

i like the idea of using magnets, but it seems like it's going to be a very expensive option for this game

ive never used magnets yet either so i dont even know that this is going to work but my plan was square "flexsteel" plates under the trays (everything except hero dioramas and siege trays) manget circles under the figure bases (ovals under the cavalry). the siege trays i was going to just glue in as i dont see a reason they ever need to be removed from the trays. for the hero dioramas i was going to file down the hole on the underside that normally fits into the peg, place a smaller plate under there, then use the same magnet under the hero base. i was then going to glue the diorama in to the trays like the siege pieces.

after that i was going to use battle foam with squares sized to a full tray with finger hole cutouts and just store entire trays together.

I was thinking another route would be to get some thin washers to glue to the bottom of the minis (a cheap, easy-to-fit option) and then on the bottom of the tray use some cheap magnet sheeting (like you make cheap fridge magnets out of) cut into circles with a circle saw bit in a drill press, with a hole drilled into the middle to fit the peg. Another option is find some circular, thin rare earth magnets to glue into the bottom, but I worry they may be too thick and expensive. Then base all of the trays and just have a special set of magnetized, based trays and all the minis get cheap metal washers. Once I have enough trays made, I just have to base any new minis I buy and add the washers.

well i was looking into www.litko.net they looked like they had reasonable prices. after i get my solution working i was going to post the sizes i used.

This would be great! I would love to know exactly what people are using.

Washers seem like it would be the cheapest route, but won't the minis be raised up higher when you try to put them in the tray?

there is a very slight indentation on the bottom of the miniatures. i dont know if you can get washers thin enough though

I don't know the exact size of that peg in the large trays but you should be able to get some earth magnets to fit. People use them for 1:100 tanks turrets and those pegs are tiny.

I won't be attaching them to a tray because a .25 of an inch on each side adds up for storage...

it's roughly 2mm

Ok, there's a rare earth magnet for that! You can find them in 50 or 100 packs from a variety of shops.

yeah I already have 150 of them..
