Synched Turret Ideas

By 4fox100, in X-Wing

So with Targeting Synchronizer now letting you spend TL for rerolls will a Synced Turret or two work well in a list? If so what list would you make? I was thinking of this.

Sienar Specialist X2

Synched Turret

Sienar Specialist

TLT

Starkiller Base Pilot

FCS

Targeting Synchronizer

Now i don't think the idea would be top tier but i do think it would be interesting to use. So let's theorycraft and find some interesting uses for the new turret.

Edit: Did not realize synched needed TL to fire. Wow, that's bad.

original post: Would you not rather keep the TL from FCS for the attack value 4 ship than spend it on the 3 die turret? Also, synched turret alreaddy gives you rerolls in arc reducing the overall usefulness of the rather expensive targeting synchronizer in this particuar list.

I think the real value of Targeting Synchronizer is still in setting up target lock ordnance (esp. from fcs). The recent FAQ is a buff in allowing TL:s to be spent on homing missiles, and for some flexibility in rerolls after the ordnance is spent. If your going to use it pretty much as an expensive squad leader, I'm more hesitant.

I think the tie/SF with FCS is the best place for synchronizer right now. I would add some ordnance carrying bombers to that and see what comes of it.

Just to be clear this interacts properly with BTL Ys with R4, right?

Sure, but the TL only adds value on the 2 die primary (given the in-arc rerolls from the turret). So unhinged is probably a better fit.

edit: Oh, I did not realize synched turret needed TL to fire

The reroll isn't as useful in that case from TS ... but use the TS lock for targeting for all ships, and let them use their own action for TL or Focus to modify their shots will be handy. Or TL another ship, so you always have two targets for each Synchronized Turret.

Try this:

Gamma Squadron Veteran (19)
Crack Shot (1)
Extra Munitions (2)
Homing Missiles (5)
Long-Range Scanners (0)

Gamma Squadron Veteran (19)
Crack Shot (1)
Extra Munitions (2)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Guidance Chips (0)

"Backdraft" (27)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire-Control System (2)
Targeting Synchronizer (3)
Lightweight Frame (2)
Special Ops Training (0)

Academy Pilot (12)

Total: 100

I'm super skeptical about Synched turret being any good at all. I wish I could say otherwise. Titled Y-wings seems to be the best place for it though.

FFG seems to be looking at turret upgrades backwards and asking "hmm... Is it better than Blaster Turret?" instead of "hmm... Is there any reason at all to ever take this over TLT?". Why synced turret, which is already mediocre at best in my mind, requires you to have a target lock to fire it is beyond me. But that isn't even the big issue. The issue is the range.

TLT is strong because the ability is good, but what really puts it miles ahead of the other turrets is being able to shoot at range 3. The coverage a range 3 turret holds is so good, you could argue a range 3 only turret would be more valuable than a range 1-2 turret due to the still decent area it covers, while still being able to maintain distance without the negative of giving defensive bonuses to the defender.

If you give dorsal, ion and synched range 3 shots, they actually might see play. Heck, take away their range 1 even and they are still better off. Either that, or turrets need to see range bonuses. If dorsal and synched are rolling 4 dice at range 1, and TLT at range 3 gives a defensive bonus, turrets might be on even footing (although autoblaster turret becomes an issue).

All in all, TLT is really hurting the design space for turrets. Maybe all of the non-Blaster turrets would see play if TLT wasn't a thing (ion did see a healthy amount of use before TLT appeared), but until TLT is dealt with, much like FCS in the systems slot, there is little reason to take something else if the points are there. And if they aren't there, you strongly need to consider making the space for them.

Btl-a4s with sync turrets! R4 agro optional.

As in, shoot, spend focus, on shot, get tl, get BTL shot?

Yes.

It's a shame that you can't fit a Weapons Engineer onto that shuttle.

Striden would also work nicely since he boosts the range of Targeting Sychronizer out to three. Not sure if it's worth downgrading the TLT to a third Synced Turret though.

I know. That was the origional idea. But 1 point too short. If you wanted to run 3 synched turrets you could but at least 1 TLT for token stripping is too helpful.

You can fit Stridan if you drop FCS.

Edit

Kavil with deadeye, Synced, Aggro.

Get rerolls out of arc at 4 dice!

... Huh. That actually works.

-Use Deadeye to fire at any legal target

-Spend Focus to modify attack dice (Even if you don't roll any focus results)

-Gain and use target lock.

Nifty.

Love it. Going to have to try this.
